Not sure about this since UA-Monticello was originally known as Arkansas A&M.

The schools had two different names, A&M College and Arkansas A&M, and were founded at the same time. It looks like they were named by district.

Do you children really not know the origin of the "A&M" designation?

This entire thread has been an exercise in ignorance.

Numerous Ag schools changed their name over the years. Ours actually doesn't even mean anything anymore, we just kept it as tradition.

There are somewhere between ~75 and ~100 Land Grant schools in the USA and pretty sure every US state has at least 1. Rutgers is the oldest (1766) to adopt the status in 1864, but Iowa State was the first to accept the status. Kansas State was the first ground up institution in 1863.

Morrill Act schools by SEC state, some had A&M in their name, but have dropped it

Alabama = Alabama A&M University + Auburn University + Tuskegee University
Arkansas = University of Arkansas + University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff
Florida = University of Florida + Florida A&M University
Georgia = University of Georgia + University of North Georgia + Fort Valley State University
Kentucky = University of Kentucky + Kentucky State University
Louisiana = Louisiana State University + Southern University and A&M College
Mississippi = Mississippi State University + Alcorn State University
Missouri = University of Missouri + Lincoln University
South Carolina = Clemson University + South Carolina State University
Tennessee = University of Tennessee + Tennessee State University
Texas = Texas A&M University + Prairie View A&M University

Auburn was an A&M, but they put it in front.

Is A&M still a true Agricultural/Mechanical school? I thought they just kept the name like it is. I may be mistaken.

Iowa State was originally The Iowa Agricultural and Model Farm (so it wasn't Ag and Mechanical...but it was an A&M).

LSU is still an A&M.

Louisiana State University and Agricultural and Mechanical College. Just rolls off the tongue, doesn't it?

Momma told be to be suspicious about anyone who went to a school with "State," "Tech," or "A&M" in the name. LSU gets a double dose of suspicion.

I think of FAMU when someone says a and m.

I do not think of FSU when someone says "State". No one calls FSU "State". Not even the yankees.

Very much so.

Agriculture is still one of A&M's biggest programs (Super Bowl MVP Von Miller has a degree in poultry science and actually raises chickens). One of its spinoffs is the College of Veterinary Medicine, which celebrates its 100th anniversary this year.

Mechanical is now what is considered Engineering today, another of its large programs. The College operates its own nuclear reactor.

Agriculture, Veterinary Sciences, and Engineering will always be a humongous part of what LSU is. Saying LSU&A&M is just too many letters

In 1976 the administration announced that "A&M" would no longer stand for "Agricultural and Mechanical". It would now mean... well... "A&M".

Yup.

We had a chance to be "Texas State" and we passed on it. Was a good move in retrospect but I bet we did it for dumbass reasons.
