As much as I hate the tide in sports, I feel so bad for children fighting and losing to cancer. I lost my mom to cancer and watched her die and I wouldn't wish that on anyone. My condolences to his family.

I did too.
Cancer is a scourge. It is bitter sweet that my profession is in cancer diagnostics. I love that i am helping people but I hate being around the thing that has caused the most pain in my life.
I am one of few that hopes my job is not needed as soon as possible.
To Mikey, No doubt you will be hearing every roll tide now and will have a better view than all of us. Roll Tide little guy, Roll Tide!

I continue to donate my money and time each year to several charities to help those that need it, livestrong, st Jude's, v foundation, md Anderson, etc. participate in tour de lis as well each year in Nola. Hopefully one day cancer will be gone. Maybe even in my lifetime.

Things like this remind you that football is sort of irrelevant but yet so important because it obviously made a hugely positive impact on his life. 1/9/12 sucked hard for me but if it made this kid's life a little bit better it was worth it.

Awful, awful news. Never want to hear of parents having to bury a child. Even more awful when they've had to watch him suffer through treatments.
So sorry for his family.

How terribly sad. I've dealt with this in my own family. Two years ago when my daughter was three she got this terrible disease (tumor under her eyelid). Thankfully through 42 rounds of chemo and an operation she is clean and you wouldn't know she went through all that. A year ago she was completely bald and today she looks like every other little kid.
Even though we were given great odds that she was going to beat it, I struggled with all the sad things we saw at the hospital. I only ever cried for other families, not ours. My daughter became involved with Camp Sunshine... they have parties, music classes and a full camp for kids dealing with and recovering from cancer. We just don't have the heart to tell her about a couple of little friends she made who passed on. Even though my own daughter had cancer I still can't even imagine the sadness and pain those parents go through when losing a child. It's incredibly unfair.
edited to add: One sad fact about children's cancer is that only 1% of all donations to American Cancer Society goes towards pediatric cancer.

You know, when the oncologist tells you there is a 90% chance your child will beat cancer it totally changes how you look at it. The experience was a total pain in the butt for all involved (bunch of overnight hospital stays having to wake up every 90 minutes for a bathroom visit). But you just adjust your life and deal with it. If we had been told her outlook was at 50% I would have been a basket case through that year.

I saw this thread when it first came up but I've avoided it because stuff like this just tears me up. To be honest, I was afarid of what this thread held inside. I'm normally a gruff, some would say heartless man but when it comes to kids I've got a heart as big as a 747. I've got two kids myself, 10 yr old son and 4 yr old little girl. They and their mother are my life. The thought of having to put one of my little ones in the ground is a nightmare I'd not wish on my worst enemy. Right now I just want to go home, put both my children in my lap and just hold them for a good long while.
Yeah, this story tore me up inside. It's not right for a little boy to have this fate. He should be sitting in his daddy's lap watching Alabama football and just enjoying be a 5 yr old little boy. Sadly, he won't get to do that anymore and his parents now have a hole in their hearts that nothing will ever begin to fill. The only solace I can find is I know this little one is now in the arms of angels and has seen the face of God. He's shed his last tear and no longer will feel any pain, only the unimaginable joy of being in the care of our Lord.
