My only gripe with the '11 defense is the lack of competition. Eight of the twelve teams they played against were ranked 95th or lower in total offense. The other teams they faced were a division 1-A team (Georgia Southern) and offenses that were ranked 85th (LSU), 84th (Mississippi State), 29th (Arkansas) in the country. The Arky offense was the only competent offense they played against all season long. They beat up on a lot of garbage offenses similar to the 2008 USC defense. It doesn't take them out of the best ever discussion but it is a strike against them.

My guess is the 92 team played similar O's

Not with that one-dimensional offense

D was definitely up there, maybe just a shade behind last years; Curry and Copeland on the line, Teague and Langham in the secondary (among others), was great to watch.

That '92 offense was an offense to offenses.

I'm glad I was a young man when Barker was under center. He's a great guy and was actually a pretty good team leader. But good Lord, it gave me palpitations every time he dropped back in the pocket to pass.

Defense was unreal but offense was lackluster. Barker was anemic. He didn't really shine until '94 particularly in that final drive at home against Georgia.

But the D. OH the D! I remember walking up into the rafters of the Dome and sitting down next to a Bama fan who asked me anxiously if I thought Bama was going to win. I looked at him and said "Dude. Bama wins by 3 touchdowns." Hell if I wasn't dead on. 34-13 was the final. There were so many unbelievable defensive plays in the game it was like a full season highlight reel. Gino looked like a deer in headlights.

Bama was about a 7-10 point underdog if memory serves. What was so crazy though was there must've been no more than 4,000 Miami fans in the dome. It was like a home game at Bryant Denny playing Western Carolina.

Actually that's about on par with their home games.

No. Would be hard to argue against the defense, though there are a couple units that could make a case, but the offense was turrible.

I remember the 92 team being nicknamed the Cardiac Kids, because of the close games. Stallings played close to the vest which resulted in alot of fg difference games.

Among the best defenses ever though.

I'm sure it's already been said, but without having time to read the posts... Bama's 1992 defense was great... among the greatest we've had. SUPER exciting to watch. I think on top of their talent, they just had an extremely strong sense of drive and chemistry. They read the field and knew where plays were going to be in the right position to make the play.

I think in terms of talent that we've had more physical talent on both sides of the ball under these recent Saban coached teams. I've just never experienced anything like the talent we have here these days (as an Alabama fan). And what they develop into is even more freaky.

1992 was a great year... but it was definitely not the best team we've had. I think these recent teams would probably beat them soundly.

Barker MAY have not even been as good as McElroy. But both were very good college QB's.

Barker may - may - have been as good as McElroy by 1994. But in 1992, there is no question he was significatnly worse than any quarterback we've had in the Saban era, JPW included.

Hard to believe he finished 5th in the Heisman voting his senior season:

139 for 226 61.5% 1996 yds 14 TD's 5 INT's

132 for 243 54.3% 1614 yds 7 TD's 9 INT's

Think about this. David Palmer was Bama's first 1000 yard receiver, with Barker at the helm.

I actually think the '11 team was the BEST Bama team of all time. But they didn't have the best SEASON of all time due to 9-6.

This. Last year's defense was the best in my lifetime.

Its hard to compare them against the 1961 team. Now that was a bad MF too. But I would agree that the 2011 team is the best modern team. And could be considered the best college football team of all time.

Just adding a little fuel to the fire, but the offenses of 1992 pale in comparison to what Bama plays against these days.

Almost all of them were two back offenses that attempted to line up and run over us. This was the pre-Spurrier SEC.

Starting with the 2008 Bama offense, they all could run laps around 92 Bama, offensively speaking.
