Losing Chavis and getting Steele was a big downgrade. Aranda vs Chavis is an upgrade to me. Chavis got lazy here, let our defensive line talent and depth get to a level that I never want to see here again. With Coach O and Aranda we are back already to having depth and the talent.

FWIW, that defensive line talent at A&M was already in place before Chavis got there.

Chavis is a very good DC. But a very lazy recruiter. Our D would have been better last year with Chavis, but our front 7 depth would have continued to degrade. With Chavis, I don't think we get all of: DT Alexander, Lawrence, Logan; LB: Divinity, White, Thornton. I honestly think Aranda will bring LSUs D to a whole new level of good =)

Mack committed specifically because of Chavis FWIW. Chavis visited him before signing day.

The guy who landed a lot of our DL talent is still on staff

Huge expectations for Trevonte Valentine and he's apparently absolutely dominating in practice.

From our other NT Greg Gilmore:

quote:

On Travonte Valentine-
“I can’t take triple teams like that. I have to use straight technique while I’m in there. I’ve got to be technique sound, be able to pass rush and move and bend. He’s in there clogging the hole, driving people back,” Gilmore said. “He takes up double teams and eats double teams up. It’s not like he’s taking double teams and just sitting there, man. He’s pushing them back.”

“(When) we teach him technique, he’s going to be unstoppable. He learns 10 percent technique, he’s going to be real good,” Gilmore said. “After practice, we get on the side and work on our plays. He has to learn the defense, learn the concepts.”

This allows Davon Godchaux and Lewis Neal to play their more natural position of DE in the 3-4. Our DL should be the best since 2011 this year.

Our D gave up several huge plays a game. Steele made Treon Harris look like he was All-SEC because McElwain got an open receiver whenever he wanted it.

Chavis wasn't a big loss. Hiring Steele was a bad move. There were several losses that were squarely on Chavis and he needed to go.

Lets all just be honest here. John Chavis is a great coach but lets also reflect on what talent he has had to work with during the times where his defense was great. LSU has guys who recruited for him when Chavis would sit on his thumbs most of the time. Chavis is trying to make chicken salad out of chicken **** at aTm with an incompetent head coach and surrounding staff. While he should be commended for what he has done the whole SEC knows what kind of guys aTm has and how they stack up when being physically pressed by tougher men. They can be all world against a direction school but when it comes to the big boys they fold like chairs.

Kevin Steele by all accounts by the current players wanted to make the defense so complex last season that hardly any of them knew what the hell he was calling half the time and were out of position due to his overly complex system. Everything coming out of spring, summer, and fall practice is how great of a teacher and ex-plainer Aranda has been of his defense and its concepts that its hard to fail at what hes asking.

LSU did not want KEVIN STEELE but unfortunately had no choice but to take him. God smiled upon and had his team of idiots (Auburn) think that it would be a good idea to grab him once they lost Muschamp. Which will prove to be a horrible mistake.

He was great until it was time to hold a late lead in a close game and then routinely shite the bed. That's the truth.

Whether it was the players' fault or just bad coaching, but as noted, all this during this past post season, especially after Aranda showed up & put in his defense, the players were saying how confusing Steele's defense was. LSU gave up 20+ plays of 20+ yrds and longer last yr, the worst in decades. Too, and this was due to Chavis' recruiting...not his personally as he did not recruit off campus..LSU's DL averaged 275 lbs last yr. Whereas bama's, the hawg's and the Black Bears' OL averaged close to 320 + or - a few yrds. Way too big of a discrepancy & the main reason LSU wore down so often in the second half. And for whatever reason, Chavis' nickname of Third & Chavis proved true at his last 2 schools, so there is that about him, to some degree or another.

You mean 12' and 14' Alabama games to be exact right?

Figure Auburn fan would say this was crap! Enjoy that defense this year at Auburn oh and thanks again for one of yours becoming one of ours(Craig), that dude is a straight up monster coach and recruiter.

You referring to the coaching combo that dropped 37 points and 448 yards of offense on TCU? That Les and Cam?

I mean every game that we allowed a team to come back to beat us. We went dead at the end of nearly every 2nd qtr and every 4th qtr on defense under Chavis.

I'm not sure I get your post. Are you thinking I'm an Auburn fan?

Are you shitting me?

Losing Chavis was one of the best things to happen to LSU.

Even last year, because it got rid of Haley coaching the DLine and LSU got Orgeron.

Chavis recruiting was stale and LSU had serious holes and lack of depth.

In Chavis' final season at LSU.. LSU was LAST in the entire SEC in sacks.

Orgeron comes in and in his first season takes LSU to tied for 3rd in the entire SEC in sacks with a&m.. and a&m is the dline who gets all the hype.. yet LSU, who was thin, still tied them and LSU had 1 less cupcake game! LSU also shut down the run much better

LSU's recruiting, especially at linebacker and d-line is finally on an elite level again now that Chavis is gone.

Do you think hiring Aranda will help Orgeron bring LSU back to being a power on the D-line again?

Aranda's defenses or more known for LB play. But Orgeron is a top tier DL coach as well. Hopefully we see LSU improve in both departments. But scheme in itself puts LBs in positions to make plays.

quote:

Also, do you think that the lofty projections for A&M's D-line is just coincidence or is he (Chavis) really that good.

I think Chavis is a damn fine coach, but also Garrett was there before Chavis' arrival. Chavis, while a great coordinator, depleted LSUs DL before his departure as he didn't deliver in recruiting. TAMU seems to be able to recruit fine, so I'd think bringing in Chavis can only benefit them.

Not specifically..

Mack would not be at LSU had Chavis stayed.

Mack was going to a Texas school and them getting Chavis probably tipped the scale.. but he was very much interested in the Texas schools, including a&m
