Also, do you think that the lofty projections for A&M's D-line is just coincidence or is he (Chavis) really that good.

steele was a downgrade compared to chavis.

aranda is an upgrade compared to chavis.

it's pretty simply.

So LSU should have a better D this year right?

I think every defense in the west will be much improved excluding the Mississippi schools and Bama although Bama has a chance to be as good as last year.

sure.

i'm sure some of you will cherry pick some stats at the end of the year to try to show that chavis and a&m's defense was better, though.

Losing John Chavis was bad for LSU, honestly. But, even worse, they hired Kevin Steele. Going from John Chavis to Kevin Steele is almost as bad as going from Will Muschamp to Kevin Steele.

While I totally agree and I love the new energy shot into the program with the Aranda hire, it would be foolish to not give John Chavis his due. Chief has been an elite DC in this conference for a long, long time. He will always field a solid, if not excellent, defense because he's just a good coach. That said, things had gotten stale at LSU, and Chief was a part of that. Everyone won in the end.. A&M upgraded, LSU -after meddlIng in defensive mediocrity for a year- upgraded and got the new energy it needed for another title run for Miles.

Last year was tough, because we all knew deep down that Steele would be a major drop off. But I think everyone agrees that LSUs D is in good hands now and the future is bright under Aranda.

I beg to differ. Ego and Freak were much ballyhooed but severely underperformed at lsu. They had little technique, couldn't get off of blocks, lost their footing. Now both are in the nfl, that speaks to talent that did not get coached.
Chavis is overrated because he was effective against offenses that are utilized less and less these days.
It wasn't enough to suffer through offenses that were static, we then had 3rd and chavis to suffer through also.
By the way, TN fans came up with that moniker, and that is supposed to be chavis' high water mark.

Beat me to it. Using TCU defense as a measuring stick, that's damn funny

the aggies has two great DE's. it's the middle that's soft. and chavis doesn't recruit nor coach either.

I think Kevin Steele being our DC hurt more than losing Chavis.

what makes you say this??

Uhh look at LSU D stats last year and compare them to the recent past. It was the worst defense since Lou Tepper in 98, 99 and Mallaveto in 2008. Good luck on the Plains!

There's way too much honesty going on in this thread. What the hell happened?

there was a time when this board was like this most of the time. The good ole days.

Now to the question. Losing Chavis was a blow cause LSU as a defense was not x & o sound last year. They just weren't. Gave up plays with guys being way out of position, just not a well coached D last year.

Aranda certainly seems to have gotten the players to buy in. Every word from them is very happy and positive.

Steele is just not a good DC. Sorry Aubie, it's the truth.

Chavis was a sound DC, got lax here in recruiting. No idea what he is doing at A&M in that regard and don't care. After a ste3p back year, it would seem LSU has ended up with a upgrade from all aspects on D. That is not a shot at Chavis. John is a stable solid DC. But he isn't much on changing stuff and after some time, certain teams know what to do vs his schemes. A&M always has some kinda D talent, Garrett is a great pass rusher but not a run stopper. I think of him like Mingo. But Mingo would actually stop the run
