When did Sammie Coates drop balls all over the place during drill?

I must have missed that entire sequence.

When they were running the separate patterns and the combine QBs were throwing them.

The ugliest was the drop of the long-ball that hit him in the hands.

Coates had one of the worst drop rates for a receiver in college football. See item 4.

I've often wondered if he needs to wear glasses/lenses. Sometimes it seems he's surprised when the ball gets there.

I hate on Coates and his dropping probably more than anyone but he almost fits the Terrell Owens mold perfectly. Almost every TO criticism from his early playing days are being said about Sammie. If he works hard enough he can overcome his faults

At worst, Coates' ability to stretch the field and his dynamic ability in the screen game due to speed/strength will make him a hot commodity. He will affect defensive gameplans which is as big a deal as having a ridiculous catch radius

Don't disagree with a word you wrote.

But he needed to blow away the combine today to move into the 1st round IMO. He didn't do that.

I think he goes in the 2nd now.

I could see him dropping to the 3rd depending on how picks go. That's where TO went too.

If he falls to late second, it could be a good thing since you'll see some quality team grab him as a value pick. He'll get into a comfortable situations that will play out to his favor.

If he falls into the late 2nd, I'd be thrilled to see the Panthers take him. His "hands" issues aside, he's a guy with speed who can take the top off a defense. He is also as strong as a bull ox and can shrug off press coverage.

What a great pic. Looks like he's hovering there.

This. Too many of the top receivers are going to go off the board quickly in the first. By the 2nd round you're going to have a lot of teams that will want a receiver; and his physical upside is too good IMO. He still stood out at the Combine physically.

I don't know Sammie's family financial situation, but I said it before and I will say it again.........it was a bad move for him to leave early. He should have stayed and worked on his pass catching abilities. It is no secret that his hands are Like Roberto Duran's.

Back in TO's day I can see Coates as a 3rd-4th round guy. But in today's passing league he's still a mid-high second rounder. A sub-4.4 40 and a top vertical could have pushed him into the 1st but his performance today isn't going to hurt him.

Another year of coaching isn't going to fix his stone hands. They haven't gotten any better yet. Better to go now while his stock is high as a physical freak than stay around and possibly get hurt, hurt his stock with another year of film of him dropping balls, hurting JJs completion percentage and getting outshined on his own team by Duke

Look, I don't know why this is so hard to understand, but guys who struggle to catch the football rarely improve at that skill. He's been at Auburn 4 years, do you seriously believe he's just going to magically learn how to catch the football in another offseason? Really? Use your freaking head.

At this point; he's better off seeing if there is someone in the NFL (a better WR coach than anyone we have at Auburn) who can maybe flip the light switch somehow. He's going in the 2nd/3rd round...if you're going that high it is never a mistake to leave early, period.

Julio Jones and I laugh at you. Stop showing your stupidity. Catching the ball is a learned trait. It isn't something like speed that you have or you don't have. Use your freaking head.

You are so hilariously wrong. They've done studies; guys who struggle to catch in college rarely improve significantly in the Pro's.

Julio Jones isn't a freaking example. Julio Jones was an uber-freak who was so freakishly gifted naturally that he'd tend to lose focus in games because the game was literally EASY for him. There is a big difference between a guy like that, and a guy who legitimately struggles to track the ball in the air. What the hell is Coates going to do in one offseason that is magically doing to have him tracking every ball ball thrown his way? If the coaches had an answer this wouldn't be a problem. Some guys just have a natural ability to sense where they are in relation to the football at all times.

Terrell Owens is a HOF receiver and he was among the league leader in drops for virtually his entire career. If its a learned trait, why the frick didn't he improve? Owens was an extremely hard worker, shown by his physique and production well into his mid and late 30's.

Catching a football is something you "learn" in freaking pee-wee football. A 5th year player at an elite program in the SEC isn't learning how to catch a football.

You have a short term mental problem apparently. At bama, he might catch it if it hit him in the hands, he might not. Save the so gifted he lost focus bullshite. It's called "soft hands" and it is a learned technique.

They left Sammie out of the 'notable 40 times' on the ticker tape announcement but included a guy who ran slower than him

Lol
