Or they've seen how a lot of the other protests have gone? Maybe they are concerned with how the kids are going to get home when 280 is going to be shut down at the same time kids need to be picked up by parents.

Yet they are not protesting at any place in the city limits of Birmingham.

Schools there don't use buses and travel outside of a mile range?

I know at "nearly a mile" we'd have students walking home within that distance. And given the violent nature of some of the protests in places like Ferguson, who would want their kid walking home in that?

I doubt that school has many walkers. It's a rather affluent area near a major highway, and any walkers they do have wouldn't be walking towards where the protest would be taking place. Plus I'm pretty sure the road it's on doesn't even have sidewalks.

They're closing early because of the potential traffic impact, which given the ice storm here in January when kids had to say at schools overnight, I guess is understandable. I was just playing devil's advocate, though I do think it may be overreacting a bit.

Yes, they are. The Summit is in the Birmingham city limits, as is the Colonnade across the interstate.

For that matter, everything on that stretch of 280 from the Summit down almost to Inverness Parkway.

Don't think so. The city of Vestavia is quite affluent, and decided years ago that bussing kids was beneath them. This came from a former executive director of their school board.

Today's the big day, guys!!!!

I predict only about a dozen or so protesters show up, and they're forced to stay on the green space in front of the Summit.

It's 34 degrees outside.

All that's needed to disperse this crowd are a couple of super soakers.

Yeah I think around 3 it's supposed to be in the upper 40's with rain likely. That will keep many people away.

Or it could just be a huge hoax and nobody shows up.

Isn't that private property? I doubt the owners of the Summit would allow a demonstration to happen there. If they did, either they would be inviting future events like this or they would be be signaling that they endorse this movement...which is probably not the kind of signal they want to send to the people that shop there.

That's why I don't see how this will work. Its either blocking 280 without a permit or trespassing on private property.

I think most of it is private property, but I've also heard the city has a larger than normal easement there to allow for expansion of lanes, which they should have done a long time ago.

The police aren't going to allow them to block traffic, so where else are they going to force them? I think it'd be good PR for The Summit to allow them that space. It prevents traffic from being blocked, and it somewhat appeases the protesters. Win/win. I don't see them losing much future business with a quasi-endorsement by letting them use that space.

I hope every one of those protesters are stricken with dysentery and shite themselves to death in front of you and you pass out from the smell of their shitty demise and hit your head rendering you incapable of posting any more of your pussy arse opinions on this board.

Merry Christmas

I figured they had an easement, but I still don't see the owners allowing too much to happen.

On the other hand, the Galleria certainly won't be putting up with any crap and wouldn't expect the tenants or employees in the mall would be happy with it considering the rents they pay.

appeasing protesters isn't a win. Especially if those protesters don't have the money to shop at your store.
