Why does referring to someone as a "Jew" seem wrong to me? I feel compelled to use the adjective form, "Jewish." I blame that Brendan Frasier movie, School Ties.
Anyway... I'm mostly of German and French ancestry, with a little Swiss, English, and Irish.

Anglo-Saxon and Scottish. Ancestors were Anglican Cavaliers who moved to Virginia in the 1650s. I do have a 6x grandma who was a Spaniard from Aragon.

American living in 'Merica. Lot of European wimpiness (Scot, Welsh, German) in my ancestors was gradually erased upon their arrival to 'Merica, for which I'm grateful.
Like others I don't get this quest.

These threads inevitably turn into a long list of everyone describing their white ancestry, as if your 12 greats grandma coming from Belgium instead of Holland means anything.
Then there's the 1 or 2 black guys who 'come out of the closet' and admit they're black, followed by at least 5-6 white people who try and chat the newly revealed black guy up because they are desperate for a black friend to seem 'cool'.

Crazy how much of a difference there is between Eastern and Western Europeans. Culturaly, financially, and in appearance.
I remember traveling from Munich to Prague and even though the two cities are only a 4 hour drive apart and both are major cities in their respective countries -- It was like hitting a black hole and popping out on the other side of the universe.
Outside of the major cities in the East (St. Petersburg, Moscow, Kiev, etc.) it feels like going back into a time machine.

I've plenty of black friends... well, at least acquaintances, and I'm definitely not cool and never have been. I'll go out on a limb and guess you live in Texas. (That's not a guess at all, your post just struck me as funny in a "Hey, look at the Texas guy talking about black people he never, ever sees" way.)
But I do think these questions are pointless. I'm an American, by gum.

It really depends on context. It's something that can be said and taken both ways. I'm generally meh about it, but I didn't grow up with the descrimination like some others.

Typical southern Appalachian Scotch-Irish with Cherokee thrown in.

Why does every white person claim this shite?
They don't. It was not too uncommon in the south to see a mixed white/native american child, but it was very uncommon in the west. It was considered a great source of shame because of the violent relationship between whites and natives on the frontier.

Whiteness is a relatively new social construct. 100 years ago the Irish, Spaniards, Italians, Jews and assorted Slavic people weren't considered "white".
So I'm not white but I am 50% German and 50% Swedish.

I have no black friends, but plenty of hispanic ones. I have black acquaintances and work colleagues, but honestly never set out to 'make a black friend' just because somebody was black. I could give a shite.
