Combining his past work as an OC with his current progress at Alabama? Obviously just his Bama stint isn't enough to put him in the top 5.

Kiffin just lead the offense to set the Bama all time yardage gained in a single day, ever. Its a fair question to ask if Kiffin is an elite OC.

No harm in a little full Gump every once and a while.

for real though, probably. He has a converted running back at qb yet they can run a competent offense. Now Lane does have a smart head coach that doesn't put his fat grubby hands on the offense so that helps him.

He has done a hell of a job so far this year.

He's top five solely based on what he did as USC OC.

The Bama stats are just icing on the cake.

Right now? No. He may turn out to be one of the best, but if you're simply ranking them according to current known factors, no. Scott Frost, Chad Morris, etc are all going to be ahead of him...for now.

You just named 2 (and then etc.). So who are the other 3 that get ranked ahead of him?

By the way, I am going to withhold judment on Kiffin and Sims until later in the year, before I start annointing them. Hyping Cooper is fine, since he has 2 other years to use as evidence.

Give him the most talent in the country on offense and he is able to blow out a bunch of shitty defenses for a few weeks in a row. How did you twist that into him being a top 5 OC in the country?

He was also very good at USC. Kiffin is an elite OC. It sucks, but it is true

I need to see more. He basically had one year as an OC at USC and four games at Bama. He has tons of talent to work with at both places. This is a better question for after the season.

He has worked wonders with Sims though. That is clearly evidence already.

He's very good, that's not in question. But we're ranking him according to current known factors, not describing how "good" he may be. One year at USC with the talent he had simply isn't enough, imho, to give a real assessment of his abilities in a comparative sense.

He did it for how long? He was also the co-offensive coordinator at USC so I think you need to pump the brakes on the whole "elite" ranking until he has run an offense by himself for a few years.

I will say that he has done a good job with Simms and bama's offense so far, but it's a small sampling.

I would classify him as a top 5 OC who should never be promoted to HC. most of the best offensive coaches I know of in college football are headcoaches.
