Sample size too small. Does Kiffin shoulder ANY blame for offensive deficiencies when he was a head coach? They were so bad he got fired on the USC team bus...

on the way back from a game in which the USC offense scored 41.

Don't get me wrong I think the guy is a total tool. but even tools are useful for the task they were designed for.

I have a question and not trying to be an arse; I just don't know. Did Kiffin call the plays as a head coach at Oakland, Tennessee, and USC? Even, if you exclude NFL, this would help answer your question. If no he obviously had elite talent at USC as an official OC there and at Bama for 4 games. I think he was a Co-OC with Sark then as well. Otherwise there is not much body of work, unless you count his HC playcalling if any.

Kiffin just lead the offense to set the Bama all time yardage gained in a single day, ever.
Hmmm... might want to double check that.

Nope. No offense Kiffin has had without Steve Sarakisian (Co-OC at USC) has finished in the top 25.

He's probably the greatest offensive mind to ever coach the game.

There are a 120ish or so FBS O-Cordinators, and another several hundred operating at all levels of football across the country; from year to year, there will be variance in success. That he has done so well at it, over a long time, speaks very well of him-- however, he's also done it with two teams that have an embarrassment of riches, when it comes to raw materials.

I'd say he's extremely good at his job-- a top notch offensive guy at making things work, even-- but I don't know if I'd qualify him over a guy who works at a marginal program and makes them better than what they should be, by a large margin.

I'd guess him as being a Top 10 type guy; the Top 5 guys, to me, end up as successful head coaches somewhere, eventually.

Hardly looking for validation. Just wondering where others view him.

Notice I didn't say Kiffin was a top 5 OC in the country. I asked what others thought.

I think it has been well established that he wasn't near as good at running a program as he is at just running an offense.

He did it for how long? He was also the co-offensive coordinator at USC so I think you need to pump the brakes on the whole "elite" ranking until he has run an offense by himself for a few years. I will say that he has done a good job with Simms and bama's offense so far, but it's a small sampling.

This is funny considering the large number of Auburn posters touting Gus as a supreme head coach after a single season as an SEC head coach and adding Sun Belt and SEC championships from his time as a coordinator to his resume.

Well he hasn't done anything that has made it look like a bad hire yet, so he's good in my book. Not like there will be any good defenses he'll face this year anyways.

and besides, if it all goes wrong, you can fire Kiffin and Saban will remain unblemished.
