His players think too much and don't know how to just play. On all these quick screens and tosses you don't have time to worry about where you are supposed to be. You have to instinctively get there. Bama's players might be extremely talented, but they aren't very instinctive. Looks like a bunch of dumb athletes trying to pass a math test out there.

Seriously. Dropping into zone when the O is throwing quick throws and screens isn't the best idea. We have crazy good athletes at CB. Put them right on the receiver and just let em play.

Yep, abandoning his whole philosophy is the only logical thing to do at his point in his career

I think we are seeing the changing of the guard in college FB. The old school guys like Saban, Spurrier, Miles, etc.. are going to get pushed out by the Sumlins. It will take a few years, but you can see that a lot of the old school guys are going to have a tough time reacting to the up tempo offenses.

adapting isn't abandoning his philosophy. Saban is a great defensive coach, we recruited for a long time to stop Florida, Georgia, LSU and at this point we have matchup issues with certain formations and offensive styles. I am sure we are working on it, but Saban's philosophy is not the problem.

I think you're overreacting. It's seemed like this has been more of a problem early in the year, esp. Game 1 when you play somebody good & there's a decent amount of new starters.

You're right about the gist of Saban's philosophy, but it doesn't have to be a bad thing. Solution? Play two cupcakes to start with and let the new guys figure out against them. By midseason you're a machine.

Yep, I have never liked zone coverage with too much cushion; it just gives the offense room work in. If you have talented CB's who can play tight coverage, they will at least be in position to make the tackle even if the pass is completed. If you don't have talented CB's, then you are screwed anyway.

His philosophy has won him 4 National Titles. Yea when they are young they do seem to be thinking too much, but if you have watched Alabama for more than one singular game and have some perspective, I'd hope you realize that by the time players are experienced and his system is ingrained, it creates a perfect storm and nearly impenetrable defense (see 2003, 2009, 2011). Yea it might be a bit more complicated early on for players than other team's defensive schemes, but by the time the players mature the payoff has typically been worth it.

You're like a telegraph company talking about how the advent of the telephone is just going to mean you're going to have to make adjustments to your business model. Deliver them faster, do some half-off singing specials.

There's a new product, and the old product has to be thrown out for the better model.

I watch teams like aTm, Clemson, Oregon, Auburn, etc and wonder that maybe the days of Saban and Miles and Richt et al are done...then LSU, Wisconsin, and yes UGA, and others yesterday show that there is a place for great defense and a fullback in the backfield.

Saban is a genius until proven otherwise (and even in such an unlikely event I will still respect him immensely).

True, playing Zone against the HUNH is a disaster. You have to play Man and pray your Corners can cover. Also, you almost have to sell out the run to cover the pass. Gone are the days of the big D-Linemen and LB's playing run first. You need smaller athletes that can stay in for long stretches where we can't sub players.

We have the guys to stop those offenses. They weren't playing. Cyrus Jones/Bradley Sylve are undersized corners, and Sylve was lost the entire game.

And then we gave the offense soooo much cushion to complete passes to.

Maybe Saban and Spurrier, but Miles, through his hires and recruiting, has built the premier anti-spread defense in the country. Not sure where this impression is coming from.

as cray as it sounds the OP is exactly right. Saban will not adapt. He thinks his way is suppose to work and if it doesnt it must be the players that messed it up. I also think because of his philosophy he doesnt end up with the best players on the field. not only does the offense look exactly the same every year but the defense still struggles with up tempo offenses. You'd think they would try to take advantage of the speed of Sims, but they try to make him a drop back passer..

"Plays" and "formations" are soooo 2012...just wind em up and let them go. Why even have "practice" for that matter? Just recruit freak athletes and then.. profits!
Sumlin is God!
