Why is he so obsessed with Saban and Alabama? It seems like he talks about us almost as much as he does South Carolina. USC fans, help me to understand. He's starting to come off as a little insecure. Everyone understands that success is relative, you don't have to keep contrasting your and Saban's situations at every turn.

What did he say that isnt true?

To me, it seems like you as a Bama fan, are just looking for some reason to fricking complain. You all are pretty good at that by the way.

I'm genuinely curious why Alabama comes up in most of his interviews. Note the reporter never asked about Bama. LINK. Spurrier keeps bringing Bama on his own. Do you think if we administered him a Rorschach test he'd see Saban's face on every slide?

To be fair I'm not sure you're reading him right anyway. His words are far more mellow, kind, and USC directed than you portray (and believe me, I know when Spurrier's on the attack - this is not an attack):

quote:

Your expectations and what you achieve are different at every school. Every school is different.

"For example, at Alabama, if I had had five No. 1 recruiting classes in the last six years like Alabama, I would say, 'Fellas we are going to mess up if we lose a game, because we've got the best players in college football.' But we're not in that situation.

Spurrier would have a a point - except that you still have to develop players.

What he's basically saying if he was put in that situation is that no matter the talent, you can't win every game. You're gonna lose and it's gonna be a hard arse loss too.

However, at this point, I'm not surprised. This wasn't a jab by any means though. It was more of a point using Alabama as a reference.

You have to wonder though if it is respect for AL that he talks so much about em or that it's just plain envy.

He probably does 10+ "interviews" a month and this is like the second time this entire offseason he's brought up Bama.

He's not trolling. He has just yet again used us as a foil to emphasize that it's USC's lack of recruiting success and winning tradition that's held him back from a conference title. We know that already, but he wants to make sure we don't forget, like he's afraid people might start to think he's not as good anymore.

My guess is a little bit of both. He never took jabs at Dooley but he loved picking on Fulmer and has taken a shot at Jones. From that it looks like he doesn't bother with coaches he doesn't respect or even talk about the teams.

When he was at Florida, recruiting was easy for him but that's not the case at USC (although Saban's recent recruiting run is absolutely unprecedented). It's also got to sting that he doesn't get the acknowledgment he should given the job he's done at USC - not only rebuilding and winning there but also winning big with recruiting classes that on average are less than what many other SEC schools pull in (not just Bama). I think Bama just represents all that due to recent success, especially those unreal 'crootin classes.

Spurrier has, unfortunately, become known more for his wit than his coaching and that's just not fair, imo.

I think the HBC is doing this for a reason with a specific outcome in mind. Recruiting maybe? Or perhaps looking ahead to a potential matchup in Atlanta?

He's the only coach with a winning record vs Saban. He likes to play head games when golfing too ... it'll drive you nuts.

Whatever he is doing, there's a purpose behind it. We'll just have to wait and see.
