Here is the enrollment statistics of states represented in the upcoming freshmen at Alabama:

LINK

Looks like close to 43% of undergrads come from out of state. Interestingly there are 1,338 from Florida, 2,048 from Georgia, 1,314 from Texas, and 1,131 from TN.

These students would likely get instate tuition at their own state school, what is the motive of paying out of state tuition to go to Alabama? At Georgia they will get Hope scholarship (basically a free ride), but why pay to go out of state?

I mean in Texas the students can go to A&M or UT-Austin.. but would paying out of state be worth it? O.o

Bama has been throwing money at anyone that will consider coming there.

It's a large, 35,000 student campus in a relatively small state. Bama is offering tons of scholarships to out of state students to lure them here.

They are actually pretty low and send out pieces that basically indicate a prospective applicant would be able to get tuition/fee waivers assuming they are admitted. So the student who meets their qualifications applies. This includes a bunch of OOS students.

Then they deny them admission. Looks good for the rankings to have diverse-locale student body with a higher rejection ratio. Of course, those that are on the right side of the bell-curve get in and they see a lot of students (just like LSU and other SEC-W schools) from the 11-20% in Texas.

At least for grad school, yes. No clue about undergrad.

They have a shite ton of recruiters & have committed a lot of money in large OOS undergraduate numbers.

LSU is continuing to recruit out of state students too but there's no way in hell our administration would go 50%/50%. We're more focused on increasing our graduate student (research) enrollment.

Huh? Last I checked a 30 on your ACT is required for some scholarship money and a 32 for in-state tuition.

It is a beautiful campus with arguably the best greek life in the country.

The school itself is rated one of the best in the SEC and located in a rather central location of the South.

The football team is THE team right now in college athletics.

It really isn't that hard to understand.

No

I have a friend who scored in the mid 20's but did well on his writing portion & basically got a full ride.

Of course he did. Everyone knows everything about everything related to Bama. It always has to be something questionable going on. Always. AU is above the fray and never has any questionable academic practices.

It's a recent change. Success of football. Lots of incentives for oos students and marketing.

I don't think Bama is doing anything shady, but I think attributing these kind of sustained numbers to the beauty of the campus, the greek life and the football team is a little naive (not saying you did it). I think these numbers show some kind of administrative preference or system that it's in place.
