Always loved him. Chubby, nerdy guy that was just insanely talented and disciplined. Heard on ESPN this morning that he had 296 games with 3 or more hits and 1 game with 3 strike outs.
19 consecutive .300 seasons.
19 consecutive .300 seasons.

Watching him hit was like watching an artist paint a masterpiece. He was the one guy you could count on to make Greg Maddux and Tom Glavine look like mortals on the mound.
RIP

Some jackass on the CBS sportsline story said that Gwynn was overrated because he didn't hit home runs. What an idiot. One of the best pure hitters ever to play the game!

Padres Tony Gwynn faced Greg Maddux 107 times in his career, more than any other pitcher; Gwynn batted .415, Maddux never struck him out.

Definition of a great athlete...was also an all conference point guard drafted by the NBA and excelled in the hardest thing to do in all of sports...hitting MLB pitching

What a dumbass. Guarantee you the guy who said that never played baseball. Gwynn is one of the best pure hitters to ever play the game. Was the closest we'll ever see to a .400 season in 1994 before it was cut short at 112 games. He was hitting .394.

Those stats are ridiculous. 19 straight seasons over 300, only ONE three strikeout game in his whole damn career? That's just stupid good.

Very, very sad today. Best pure hitter I have ever seen. Would watch in awe as he fouled 6 or more pitches.....on purpose.....because the pitch was to close for a called strike but not to his liking. A true master.
My son is eight. I have a Tony Gwynn game worn helmet that will eventually be his and he cherishes it already. Gwynn wore it on June 12, 1999 against Houston and achieved hit #2977 while wearing it. I'll have to break the news to him tomorrow.

Heard Chipper Jones tell a crazy stat this morning about Gwynn..Gwynn hit .338 for his career and could've gone 0-1000 and still hit .305, which is a few points above what Chipper hit for his career.

Another crazy stat. He never struck out more than 40 times in a season. Quite a few guys had more than that in a month last season. Unreal hitter

Heard on the Braves broadcast last night that he would still take bp with SDSU everyday before the last surgery. He would call the pitches when they left the pitchers hand before smoking them all over the field. Finally, the pitcher let one go and Gwynn yelled duck and promptly hit it right back at the pitcher. Pretty damn talented he was!

I remember he could make a pitcher throw 10 pitches and then still get a single. That had to get in a pitchers head.
