Does it piss y'uns off how every time someone is playing a southerner in a movie or on tv they sound like some kind of retarded dipshit?

Yes, it does. It's become acceptable to rip on southerners. Comedians from the North do it routinely. I hate David Spade because of his bigotry towards southerners.

I get what you're saying (although Joe Dirt may be the funniest movie ever) but what I'm getting at is why can't they find actual actors from the south who can speak like an actual southerner... take Sandra Bullock in the Blind Side - did the people producing this actually think she sounded right?

It bothers me a lot actually. It doesn't help our case that every time someone from the south is interviewed it's a poor or redneck uneducated inarticulate gal or dude that sounds exactly how everyone expects us to.

I've been told I don't have an accent at all.

I hate the southern accent so of course I hate bad acting with even worse southern accents.

I also hate this "y'uns" crap.

Maybe y'all should quit calling everyone a Yankee. Then all those Yankees that make them movies wouldn't make southerners sound like retarded dipshits.

I think most educated southerners have only slight accents at most. We've travelled, read the classics and have been exposed to many different cultures.

As roadhouse mentioned, producers seem to think a southerner is uneducated and crass. Some of the fake southern accents on The Walking Dead, for example, grind my gears.

It doesn't bother me. For every decently educated, decent sounding Southerner there are 10 rednecks who sound just like or worse than the actors.

The younger ones, yes. Many older southerners, no matter how educated, still have very thick accents.

No.

ETA: I don't know how Leanne Touhy sounds IRL though. SMH at myself.

I see what you're getting at but it's not like that. My accent (or lack there of) is apparently noticeable enough people in MS comment on it.

Just ignore it, that's another brilliant plan by their resident tard.

Yeah, another couple of generations and we'll all sound pretty much the same everywhere in the U.S.

Sandra Bullock's family is from Birmingham. Her father and aunt live there.

I've been told I don't really have one either, by people in Alabama and New Jersey.

I'd say that 90% of the people in southern Birmingham lack an accent, at least that was the case at my high school. It's heavier elsewhere but it's certainly starting to lose itself
