oh ok that makes more sense, I thought you were referring to the nasally "a" sound that some St. Louisans speak with.

But you're right. I have a couple of friends at Mizzou from the boot and their accent is astonishingly thick. They make the Duck Dynasty cast sound like yankees

In real life Midwestern accents are far and away the most retarded sounding accents.

Which Midwestern accent?

There are several and the Midwest is pretty fricking diverse.

I'm assuming you mean the Upper Midwest/Great Lakes family of accents, specifically the "yooper" accent and its relatives in Wisconsin, Minnesota and the Dakotas- most of my family has that. The bouncy singsong pattern is a carryover from Swedish/Norwegian/Finnish.

The rest of the Midwest, in my experience, is pretty accent neutral - especially the plains.

SNL Animal Hospital
These actually may be the best southern accents I've heard on tv. The women at almost every office in the southeastern Kentucky area talk just like this. They also have those hairstyles.

I saw a show on PBS a few years ago and learned that most newscasters are from (or used to be from) the midwest because their accents were considered 'neutral'

People love Southern accents. Only self loathing Southerners and hipsters who pretend to be intellectually superior to everyone else dislike it.

Ding ding ding! We have a winner.

I'd also add that the uneducated guido NJ/Philly types that sound borderline retarded also rip on the southern accent a lot.

Not really, because they are just jelly... However, I can't stand Paula Deen and her fake shite - and we both are in the same town. That definitely is not helping the cause.

I guess you can put me in this group. I really hate a strong southern accent and have tried to rid myself of any southern accent I might have had when I was young.

Not really because I live in the South and most of it is justified.

take Sandra Bullock in the Blind Side - did the people producing this actually think she sounded right?

This. Though she is hotter than a firecracker, her accent was turrible. Irritating to those who know what someone from Memphis/Mississippi area sounds like.

I'm working on my PhD, I'm very well-read, well-traveled, but still have a pretty thick southern accent. I'v been told by a fairly good amount of northerners how lovely my accent. Sure, I've also been ridiculed for my accent on occasion but that doesn't really bother me. I'm not really change who I am because some dipshit from another part of the country thinks I should.

Paula Deen is so bad I couldnt watch her show and when i did, I had to turn the sound down after 3 minutes. Her accent is absolutely irritating to the max. And I think its fake too.

Ever hear Shelby Foote? The civil war historian? Now that guy has a great southern accent. An educated gentleman.

Hardest I ever laughed was at one of his shows.

And I don't think Paula Deen's accent is fake, more than it is exaggerated. But yeah it is annoying as frick, y'aaawwwllll.

It bothers me a lot actually. It doesn't help our case that every time someone from the south is interviewed it's a poor or redneck uneducated inarticulate gal or dude that sounds exactly how everyone expects us to.

I was born in TX, but have lived in MS, AR, TN and FL as well, and in my experience, just like with British accents, there are variations, some which sound retarded as shite, and some that are very pleasant.

Oh, it's fake. She's from the same area as my boyfriend and I've been there more times than I can count. No one there has an accent like that.

^This. I live pretty close and have never heard that shite. It sounds like the northen/hollywood version. Who knows, its probably part of her marketing scheme - which is pretty successful so I guess that fake shite is working.
