It's by far one of the most bizarre situations I can recall.

Right? I lean right, but I haven't been listening the the right radio for a few years, and yet, in my un-radio/biased/whatever opinion, this seems pretty fricked up.

It's common sense really. By negotiating out this deal we've now just encouraged hostage taking.
Al Qaeda wants their guys out of GITMO? well we just sent them a message loud and clear that all they gotta do is go and find them some more hostages.

Yeah, they're probably already targeting the next fool that walks away from his unit unarmed. It'll be interesting to watch how this debacle plays out.

Right? Everything I've ever heard in real life, in TV shows, in anything. We do not negotiate with terrorists.

It appears now that we not only negotiate with terrorists, but we're pretty shitty at it as well.

This is fricked.

They wouldn't if we hadn't negotiated. They'd just say: Hey look, an American! Let's get him!

Nah, they don't negotiate with terrorists like us -- let's just leave him alone.

You can add "illegal" to that as well.
How the hell does congress not get notified?

Well, they were notified in one of the president's stump speeches saying that he'd do what it takes to get prisoners back.

God, pay attention.

My bad haha.

Call me old fashioned but I like my notifications to be followed up with a vote. You know, like the constitution requires.

But maybe thats just me

Well, not to get too technical, but I'm pretty sure the protocol is to inform the leaders of both parties in the legislature and some essential committee members, and that there's never a vote.

But either way, that wasn't done and they're saying it was done through a speech.

This whole thing has made me sick. I guess now the Taliban will be hunting for people to kidnap so they can free the rest of their people. This one deserter will end up killing hundreds of people.

I said the opposite: He's no hero. Surrender is cowardly. It's just silly to be like: WELP, GUESS THEY'LL KIDNAP MORE PEOPLE NOW. BEFORE THEY'D JUST LOP THEIR HEAD OFF AND BE DONE WITH IT OR IGNORE FOREIGNERS.

It's just a really stupid proposition.

2 things: he wasn't listed as a POW (by the military) and Obama didn't negotiate with terrorists....he paid full price (I read that somewhere and it's still funny).

We have now shown that we will negotiate with terrorists, even for someone who walked away willingly. Very bad precedent. Will embolden terrorists.
