its legal in most areas, just not as strong as the illegal stuff.

However "moonshining" or making moonshine without permits wont ever be legal, just like pot without permits. The gubment want their tax money

Exactly. Prostitution, weed, and moonshine are too hard to tax.

Because the state you live in is so backwards you have to buy your booze from a cop.

Weed isn't any harder to tax than cigs. Moonshine is just another whiskey. Prostitution is a little more difficult but if it were legalized and regulated but not any worse than many other professions that involve tips as a major source of income.

I think a lot of the appeal to moonshine is that it is illegal though, plenty of other alcohols you can buy legally that can fit whatever fancy you have.

It has some to do with taxing, but not really... people are allowed in most places to make their own beer and wine as long as they don't sell it.

Making moonshine or any hard liquor is very dangerous if you don't know what you are doing... your dealing with an extremely flammable liquid possibly under pressure near a heating source...

Already legal in TN. The funny thing about Popcorn Sutton is he could've done it all legally - he just didn't want to pay the tax man. Even so he might've gotten away had he not blown a barn sky high on accident.

Its a little easier to grow and smoke enough weed for ones habit than grow enough tobacco and process it to smoke cigs

and easy to make

Prostitution is a little more difficult

Just like the others you would have to be caught in the act, but its easy to hide as you can do it behind closed doors

agreed, the legal strangle hold on alcohol over the year has also hindered the desire for anyone to produce it on their own, despite the ease

Even if you do know what you're doing when you're running a big operation where a LOT is being stored in one place (like Popcorn was) all it takes is one overlooked thing. He was running a distillery more than anything and got caught because the barn blew.

Single still operations aren't nearly as dangerous as there's far less that can go wrong.

on a large scale with poorly crafted tools it is. but they are poorly crafted because its illegal.

Ive made many batches of shine. There is no fear.

Exactly, the explosions are from shitty stills and running them unattended

The best moonshine is what the maker's often keep for themselves. It's charcoal filtered and looks like normal whiskey. It doesn't get sold because people who want moonshine would be disappointed with it - moonshine is suppose to be clear in everyone's mind. But the filtered stuff is very, very, good IF you can get a hold of it.

I said possibly under pressure, cause if you don't know what you are doing it's pretty easy to put it under pressure.

ETA: the point is, the reason is it is illegal to make and will remain illegal to make by the average joe is because it is dangerous to make...it has nothing to do with how strong it is, the fact that it's moonshine, or because of taxes.
