I think barrel ageing is where it gets it's color.
It is, at least the majority of it...
As the seasons change the whiskey goes in and out of the wood as the temperatures change. I saw a guy that made rum get the same effect by hiding barrels under rocks in the ocean so the pressure of the tide pushed the rum in and out... Pretty neat idea, and expensive.

That is some of it but the stuff I had was specifically charcoal filtered.

I've seen them soak a charred piece of wood in moonshine to get the color and flavor as well.. it's a quick easy way.

the reason is it is illegal to make and will remain illegal to make by the average joe is because it is dangerous to make.
Just like weed is dangerous, right? the drug culture will lead you to violence etc...
Dont believe the propaganda. Its taxation, lobbying, and the course of history as to why its illegal. The only reason why it wont have a resurgence is because of convenience and complacency through our recent history because fo the regulations.
All the same dangers you mention are in everyday legal life as well.

Weed is illegal... Alcohol is not.

Then why is it legal for me to make my own beer and wine?

Cheap and easy way to somewhat copy the barrels.
I was at a distillery in mexico this summer, they used all the old barrels from one of the bourbon plants in Kentucky to make a special batch of tequila, it was delicious

When we had Prohibition you were still allowed to brew your own beer an wine FWIW.

Where I live (East, TN) I'd could prolly find tons of 'average joes' who are as skilled as any master distiller. Moonshining never stopped here although fewer make it. Thunder Road was active in 50s, 60s, 70s, and beyond because Knoxville would not allow alcohol to be purchased. Moonshiners ran Thunder Road delivering shine to Knoxville where it was often purchased and drank in private clubs by members of 'high society'.
There's a reason NASCAR developed in E. TN.

If y'all want it to be legal for some retard to build a still in his apartment next to you... then I just don't know what to say.
Posted on 4/2/14 at 3:24 pm to NATidefan
^Well I'd think building codes would take care of that. As for me, I live on top of a mountain with no neighbor close enough for it to matter. There's actually a winery/vineyard right across from me.

So you can only make it in a safe location in the country, you can't sell it, and you can have a big still.... Why not just keep it illegal? No one gets busted for making moonshine for them and their friends anyway.

I work in the insurance field, you already have a retard living next to you that can do just as much damage or more, legally. I promise
FWIW its not really any more dangerous than a turkey fryer

Up until a couple years ago, homebrewing was illegal in bama. Felony.

i know guys who were making their own moonshine not too many years back - understood you could produce so many gallons at one time and have only so many gallons in your home at one time - they made it pretty much like this guy does
maybe the laws changed, i donno
