He hasn't coached since the mid 90's when Georgia gave him the ax.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh... I was not aware of that... He was such a fan and player favorite and such a fast track head coach, I am shocked to hear that he had no coaching opportunities after UGA...

FWIW.. Ray & Stephanie bought, restored & donated my great-great-great-great-great-grandfathers(William Daniell)home in Oconee Co. back to the County in the early 2000's...

quote:

The William Daniell House is supposedly the oldest surviving structure in Oconee County. It is believed to have been constructed in 1790 for his wife Mary (Polly) Melton. William Daniell served in the Revolutionary War under the command of General Elijah Clarke and served in the Battles of Kettle Creek and King’s Mountain, among others. In 1999, this house was restored by Ray Goff and Stephanie Goff. Presently, the home is owned and maintained by Oconee County. The William Daniell House can be rented for special occasions by coordinating through the Oconee County Civic Center

Know a former player who had the misfortune of playing for Goff's first team...cannot think of
words strong enough to describe his dislike of the man

Ray Goff is a nice guy.

Some bullies wouldn't let my dad play basketball with them on his lunchbreak when he was working as a Staff Physician for UGA back in 1976.

Ray Goff ran them off and the 2 had the whole court to themselves.

I'll defer to Mr Buck on this one...I'm sure ole Ray himself would admit to his mistakes back then...my buddy played for VD and had no complaints....Goff was a different story completely.

Hey,I met the guy and thought he was good guy but didn't play ball for em...completely different story

I think you would have a difficult time finding ex players who feel fondly of him. He can put on the charm and the raspy voiced good ole boy routine, which only made a lot of people dislike him more. How he jumped coach Haffner is a mystery, but there must have been pictures and livestock involved. I guess he could have matured since then and became less of a dick without all the pressure of coaching in a spot way over his head... He may be the greatest guy ever now.... Who knows?

Got a good buddy who played baseball while you were there (I assume). He says basically the same thing you just said. BUT a year ago I heard a true story from a guy about a great deed Goff did for the guys mom when she was dying (while Goff was HC). it was really a fascinating deed that involved him going way out of his way just for her. The story really had a lasting impression on me.

Besides the Zaxby's franchises, he has a home reclamation and building business, as well as a business that recycles old wood lumber for re-use...

Good for him. Sounds like he made some good career moves.

.... And kept quiet opening himself to more offers for business opportunities than the average ex jock...

He was a dick when I was there. He's a little more humble now. But without a doubt, he was self absorbed and cocky during his time as HFBC.
