He is their most successful coach since Darrell Royal was briefly HC in the 50s. They should be giving him some security.

If MSU wins the west, would Mullen become coach for life?

As long as he can beat Ole Miss every other year he is on solid ground.

They wanted to fire him last year before he beat OM.

Hell they wanted to fire him real badly on a bye weekend because ole miss beat a ranked conference team, something he can't do.

Doesn't seem to be a raise involved. Just makes sure that he can tell recruits he'll be here in 4 years. We do it every year because the longest contract allowed in Mississippi is 4 years.

Sherrill did; win the West, I mean.

Coach Merlins is the Bert of the Big 10. He can beat the bad teams, but not the good teams.

I don't see an issue with that. Like SC, MSU's history shouldn't allow them to be too picky or too demanding of coaches. Mullen has them in a relatively good position and he deserves some more time to see where he can get them.

Hell Spurrier didn't get any real success going until 2010 in his 6th season.

He's a good coach and apparently happy where he is. He probably enjoys not having a such a high pressure job.
