to do a one game playoff for the true National Champion since they split it that year. Obviously, the NCAA turned it down saying it went against their by-laws,etc.
I vaguely remember this but just came across it a little while ago looking up something else.

USC had already beaten Alabama that season.

Did you ever see the ABC interview with the Bear, where he talked about moving to a 60ish team league and going to playoffs?
Used to be on youtube, but has since been taken down.

no,but I believe it. Bryant was always on the cutting edge. If anyone ever had "it" it was Bryant.

They actually played the game in secret at an undisclosed high school field. Bama won (obviously) 74-6

In fact, Alabama had already lost to USC at home.

Rematch is Bama's birthright.

had instant replay been around in 78/79 Southern Cal and Michigan would have tied in the Rose Bowl and Alabama would have won the UPI and AP title.

The CEO of Gateway tried to get USC and Auburn to play.

There was a stronger and more concerted call for it after the 1983 season.
If you want to read about it, go to the si vault online. Last page of the issue right after the new years bowl in Jan of 1984 discusses the need for a playoff after the 1983 clusterfrick that robbed AU.

Shoulda gave Bear more support.
I really think, if he hadn't passed so quickly, he'd had been a huge player in getting it done within a few yrs after his retirement.

Didn't they say no as well, when someone was willing to pay to have LSU and USC after 2003?

Maybe so. I never knew he supported a playoff but good for him. He was always a progressive thinker football wise, willing to change things up.

Yep. He wanted a division with about 60 teams too. He foresaw the mess coming with Div 2 and 3 getting more clout under the NCAA. Read up on the CFA as well.

If the YouTube vid was still up, I would watch it.

Do any of you honestly think Bryant would have been in favor of a one-game playoff between the top two teams after Jan 1, 1980?
Dude was all about innovation - so long as it wasn't to his disadvantage.
Sounds familiar somehow.
