Alabama honors scholarship offer to prospect with career-ending injury
Elisha Shaw was a highly recruited defensive tackle in Tucker, Ga., when he suffered a neck injury that ended his senior season before it began. Shaw recently learned that due to the injury, he's unlikely to ever play again.
On national signing day Wednesday, however, Shaw committed to Alabama as part of a Tucker High signing ceremony that included 15 other athletes. He did not sign a letter of intent, according to Tucker High coach Bryan Lamar, but will receive a medical hardship scholarship. The medical exemption allows Alabama to pay his tuition without counting him against the Crimson Tide's 85-scholarship limit.

It's a shame these kinds of stories don't get more attention in college football.

Whatever. Bottom line is they were able to give a kid a free education without hurting their scholarship numbers in anyway, while worming their way into one of the top football talent H.S.'s in Georgia.
Good marketing, but it wasn't done purely out of the goodness of Nick's heart.

Did Georgia offer him the same deal? I've read that Saban and his staff were the only group to stick by him from start to finish.

And that's great for Shaw. All I'm saying is that there is an ulterior motive here. And since it hurt's Alabama's scholarship #s not a whit, it's not like Saban is sacrificing anything. What he is doing is getting in very tight with Tucker H.S.
Great idea as it helps with future recruiting without hurting his current numbers. But not exactly the feelgood story of the year, imo.

This is SEC football dude, decisions aren't made without an ulterior motive. The fact is still that any other school could have given this kid a free ride and it wouldn't have hurt their numbers either. They didn't. In the end Saban honored this kids offer and he is getting a free college education.
If anyone was worried about Saban getting in tight at Tucker then they could have offered shaw the same deal and kept recruiting him.

Did Richt offer the same to the guy? I mean he's a Georgia boy and all, so surely a good man like Mark would offer the same.
Oh, so Saban does this for every promising senior who hurts himself and can't play in college?

Unless maybe he's doing it to worm his way into the Tucker H.S. pipeline.
Hey, I get Bama fans buying it, but it's kind of funny seeing the other fans who know better lapping up the Saban B.S.

I agree completely. I think it was smart for Saban to do it.
But he did it because he is smart, not because he's into benevolency and charity cases.

We get what you're saying. But at the end of the day the kid gets to go to college when he might not have had a chance to. Either way, that's a feel good story. Plus, I guarantee you he has it in his head that he can come back from the injury, nobody but Alabama is giving him that chance.
