I know that you can't make comparisons well from one era to another, but when you conisder how complex the game is, how much is involved in recruiting, how much a coach today does, the internet, social media, 100,000 seat stadiums, the speed of the game, etc., how do you think today's coaches would compare against the greatest of all time, Bear Bryant?

Would Bryant have been able to keep up in this type of setting. I am just thinking about how we call coaches morons and stupid and criticize their every move, and the worst of the SEC coaches might be more capable than Bryant was at his peak, all things considered.

This is not any kind of slam on Bryant. He was the greatest and I admire what he did. I am really just asserting that we are way too hard on the coaches of today, at least in some of our criticisms.

Well, most of them are alive. That's a good bonus.

Saban is the only current coach that deserves to be mentioned in the same sentence as the Bear. Spurrier has an argument.

For all the success Bryant had at Alabama, he was also very successfully at Kentucky. When Rupp was there. I think he'd still do well today.

Joker Phillips couldn't hold Bear's jockstrap as a HC.

If Spurrier wins an SEC Title at Carolina, then he deserves to be right there. Things have changed drastically here since he took over, but we have to get a title first.

They don't.

Simple as that.

BS!

Spurrier at Florida didn't have the competition of today's SEC.

And Spurrier hasn't been able to reinvent his success. Championships (of any level at USCe)?

I'd say Saban >=Bear >> Spurrier.

Bear Bryant could recruit some of the better football players just to have them on the bench so they wouldn't be on other SEC teams.

And Saban has two SEC championships at Bama.

Two.

I never thought I'd hear somebody make the argument that a coach was better than Bear Bryant with only 2 SEC championships at Bama. (4 total I guess but when people talk about Saban being great they talk about what hes done at Bama, not at LSU)
