Will the SEC get back to defense any time soon?

Offenses this year put up insane, record numbers for the conference. I know it's been building to this point, but it almost seemed to come out of nowhere for some of the teams who didn't do jack last year (Auburn, Mizzou).

Just as a style and brand of football, I can honestly say I do not enjoy the video game like scoring that happened at times this year. Not just when Bama was allowing it to happen (A&M, Auburn to an extend, and Oklahoma) but even when I watched other SEC games this year there were sometimes effortless TDs.

I much prefer the nasty defenses dominating like LSU 2011 or Bama 2011, and I hope we can at least get back closer to the middle (scores of 23-17 rather than 43-37).

Do you think offense this year was merely a combination of experienced QBs and young defenses, or should we expect Big 12 offensive numbers for the next 5 years?

Just from a rules standpoint, it isn't going back. Just look at the legalization of holding in the league. That right there probably accounting for an additional 7 points a game.

BAMA. LSU, and Mizzou had three of the best defenses in the country. The SEC has discovered NFL level qb's and passing games. Don't see that bell getting unrung.

HUNH destroys careful defensive playcalling. Forces Ds to be reactionary.

The Spread forces them to defend the entire field, and makes it so linebackers must be good in pass protection and not just run stopping. Few can do both well.

In innovation in football is on the offensive side.

This wasn't just a Bama thing, the conference as a whole was much more high scoring this year. LSU did alright, but even they allowed high numbers than past years.

Yes. As soon as SEC defenses learn how to defend wide open, yet run balanced offenses and Auburn's offense, then defenses will once again rule.

No. Defenses are adapting to stopping the spread offense. Auburn, A&M, OleMiss, Mizzou, and State are making teams in the SEC build their defense to stop the spread and some teams are still transitioning to get the personnel on defense to stop it which leads to defenses allowing so many yards per game .

Alabama's D is built to stop Pro Style Offenses because they dominated teams like LSU bit struggled vs spread teams like A&M, Auburn, and Oklahoma.

LSU defenses stopped spread teams ( Auburn, A&M ) because our D is built for that with small , faster players but we struggled stopping Bama and UGA.

Once defenses adapt to the offensive changes teams in the SEC are bringing, the defensive dominance will be back because the SEC has the best athletes.

If offenses continue to evolve into schemes that emphasize high-speed rhythm to exploit the defense's lack of preparedness.......nope.

It certainly helps when every single rule change in the last 15-20 years has been in favor of offense.

I'm content with the MSU D play this year from such a young group of guys and a yr 1 Coordinator. We're light years better in every aspect of schemes and development thanks to GA hiring Wilson and letting Juicy Geoff Collins get his D coord feet in the water.

Can't speak for the rest of the SEC but it appears we have lost sight of the concept.

Florida had the SEC's 2nd best defense this year despite the team's record.

Had Easley not gotten hurt, they would've been the best defense by far.

We heard this 8-10 years ago when Florida was running the spread with Leak and Tebow in the "wildcat".

meh HUNH snd spread offenses we're largely ineffective against us this season. If we can just get our linebackers to beef up so they can shed blocks to stop the run we will be alright I'm not worried about my team playing defense.

Pretty much agree. Our defense was hurt from the loss of Easley and the "run, run, incomplete pass, punt" offensive scheme we used. Oh well, hopefully we'll be good on defense again next year.
