I know Mark Ingram was the first Heisman winner to play for the University of Alabama. Before he won the Heisman, which Alabama player came to the closest in the voting to win this trophy? TIA

was either Barker or David Palmer, but they weren't closer than 3rd or 4th.

Thanks, didn't recall Palmer getting that many votes. Kept thinking it would have been Musso or someone from the early 60's

David Palmer finished 3rd

Lee Roy Jordan and Johnny Musso finished 4th I think.

Several players fininshed fifth.

Richardson (after Ingram) finished 3rd.

Yeah I was joking with that one. I don't remember much about Palmer but I do remember Barker.

He was a very good QB

This link has the Heisman vote list all the way back to 1935.

LINK

Harry Gilmer came in 5th in both 1945 and 1947.

Musso might have won it in 1971 over Pat Sullivan if voting had been after all the regular season games, like it is today.

Well, crap. I was looking forward to a quiet evening at home with my good-lookin' wife, but now I have to watch "24" episodes. Thanks a lot!

I want to say Derrick Thomas finished in the top 5, but I could be wrong.

That qualifies it as a win then. Bama claims national championships with less reasoning.
