With Dodds retiring...

...what are your thoughts on renewing the t.u. rivalry? Yeah I know the schedules are somewhat fixed, but I'd bet adjustments/cancellations could be made if both sides agreed. Personally I'm flip-flopping. On the one hand there's over 100 years of tradition. On the other hand... frick 'em.

We only need to renew that game if tu starts gaining on us again, which is highly possible when they announce the new head coach.
Right now, losing to a mediocre tu team hurts worse than finishing 3rd in the west and winning a bowl game with a recognizable name.
In the future, it may to our benefit to defeat a threatening horn team several years in a row, but right now they aren't threatening.

I want it back.
IMO all reasons anyone can give for not playing them anymore are either spineless, arrogant, and/or extremely hypocritical considering the attitude Texas/Dodds had for killing the series that all of us bemoaned just a short time ago.
That said, I can't see it coming back until 2019 at the earliest and more likely 2024 due to games they already have scheduled against P5 schools and their need for at least two OOC games a year to be on LHN.
The only way it comes back sooner is if the Big12 goes back to 12 teams with an 8 game conference schedule.

I was never a fan of that game being cancelled. Too many egos and emotions got in the way of a statewide tradition. I hope that game is continued soon. Thanksgiving in our household is not the same without Texas vs Texas A&M
Oh, and the idea that A&M "needs" Texas (or vice versa) just because the game is back on the schedule is silly in my opinion

Can't be on their terms, that's for sure.

If their new AD approaches us then we should certainly negotiate and try to come to an agreement. No reason to go out of our way at this point though, we did our part and the ball is still in their court.
It needs to be at the beginning of the season though. Keep LSU on T Day weekend. I'll be pissed if we try to move that to put Texas back at the end of the year

I get that, but what game could possibly be bigger or even in the same neighborhood for either team, as far as money and national exposure goes? I'd think paying off whatever team was scheduled would make financial sense. That's assuming both sides really want it to happen, which may not be a safe assumption.
I'll grant that my wanting this game is in large part due to carrying very large trees out of a forest shouting "1, 2, frick t.u." (the rest of the chant isn't suitable even for this board)., and that ain't happening ever again. I'd like to see it played again, but I keep coming back to "frick 'em".

well right now here is what they have set up
There is no way they kill a series with ND, USC, or Ohio State to play us b/c they all have higher national appeal (b/c they are not regional) and offs are extremely high none of those schools would be willing to have their games put on LHN. (which makes me think they will buy out of Cal in '16)
Since we also would also refuse to play on LHN I don't see us being added to their schedule until 2024 unless the Big 12 allows for 2 LHN conference games every year (doubtful) or the Big 12 goes back to 12 teams and an 8 game conference slate (50/50).

OK, since you went there
In my day it was
1, 2, frick t.u.
3, 4, eat a whore
5, 6, suck my dick
7, 8, masturbate
9, 10, do it again
Not something you wanted your mama to find out about.

I keep thinking the next AD will try to negotiate his way out of the LHN (or, more probable, ESPN will since it is a money pit). I'd say that's wishful thinking, but I'm not sure if I wish for that or not. Best shaggybevo comment I've ever seen was for the Ole Miss game:
We're Texas! *
* Offer not available in Texas.

College football is and always will be better with rivalry games. It's something that Dodds and others like him just never got (and it's why when you look at their sched today it's just full of fail). He ended the tu-Arky series. He refused to play many of the former SWC members (for various reasons). We certainly aren't blameless and did some of the same and it's a shame. But the rhetoric used by both sides is childish.
The accountants and black and white thinkers got the best of it. And they have even gotten the fanbases talking ridiculously about "what do we gain by playing?" It's crazy. You gain a game that matters even if both teams suck. You gain a year of water cooler talk in offices around the state. You gain a game that both sides circle on the schedule whether it's because of pure hatred, pride, or just because you despise losing it. College football is just much more enjoyable when you are playing games that matter, on any level.
And the SEC would bend over backwards to get that game back. Believe it or not, it would lift up both conferences. Ideally the SEC West would have 3-4 rivalry games with the Big 12 like the SEC East has with the ACC.

Very well said, good enough to force me off the fence. I'll set "frick 'em" aside for now.

I don't think it does and I don't think it will. Beginning of year rivalry games lose a great deal of their luster. We actually have a cross-division game leading into LSU now and no one else does meaning it's set up for an OOC game for both of us (Mizzou). I could see Texas and KU sliding into that slot in mid-Nov.
I could also see LSU not wanting to play on Tday and being okay with a switch back to Arky. That also frees up Mizzou-KU for that weekend. There would have to be another round of negotiations and if Texas wanted it Tday one of the conditions imo would have to be KU also get back with Mizzou.
The cross-conference games at year end actually have an enormous value. Tbh, Rivalry Weekend has turned into SEC showcase weekend with just bunches of big games. It's hard not to have a few monsters among: AU-UA, LSU-Arky, UGA-GT, USC-Clem, and UF-FSU. In the biggest college football weekend of the year, the SEC has been stealing virtually all the oxygen every year (USC-ND last year being the exception). That's how you stay on top.
The SEC also has the advantage of FSU, Clemson, and GT's biggest games of the year being vs the SEC which basically leverages them a great deal for our tv contract (and the ACC gets the same benefit) without adding them to the conference. An annual game, unlike a one-off, can be considered in tv negotiations. That same benefit comes into play with the Big 12. I'd actually like to see something like OU-LSU and Arky-OSU that weekend as well. I think that would be pretty badass.

When it first went down I was pissed, I didn't want to lose that game, but now I really don't care. I don't really miss it. The only thing I regret is not being able to watch the shaggy meltdown after jff stomped a hole in them.

Honestly don't care either way.
