Using the 1930 census, two years before the league was formed:

Atlanta - 270,366
Birmingham - 259,678
Memphis - 253,143
Nashville - 153,866
Charlotte - 86,675

Without spending my night pulling up industrial output data from the 30's, I can assure you that Birmingham was a very powerful city at the time of the SEC's birth. Even accounting for the Great Depression, the city's output of steel, iron and coal rivaled any industrialized Northern city. Add to that, it's being roughly in the center of all the SEC schools, it was a perfect place to put the office.

Well, just to be fair, the SEC HQ didn't move to Alabama until the late 40's or early 50's(I think). I know that at one point they were hq'd in Jackson, MS.

If moving tSEC HQ will improve the general gawd-awful officiating this league has I am all for it. Penn Wagers is either a very corrupt man or grossly incompetent. Despise that guy.

The SEC office's inability field officials of a quality and consistency that this league deserves is an abomination. It reeks of corruption.

Not sure there is a tie between officiating and Bham but I love to slam SEC officiating (not just in football either).

Is that true? If so then that is a very telling sign of the future times.

No, it isn't. The Regions office in Nashville is moving to a different building in Nashville when the lease expires this year.

I say those Chinamen in Korea should go ahead and just nuke Birmingham. Imagine... billions of dollars worth of improvements!
