Was it actually just an "administrative error"? And if so, is he really out for the whole season?

So far that's all we know. So, maybe.

Has already been appealed and denied, so I'm guessing yes. Not sure what the next step would be.

100% out for the season. Wonder if he could transfer.

He could, but he wouldn't play this year anyway.

I'll always like Jordan for his truck stick in the egg bowl but if I were him I would transfer. Swiney and Pennamon are going to be the 1,2 punch for the next 3 years. Especially next year.

Agree. Having Judd this year will help but we are solid with our two freshmen this year and Akers next...

The only real fact known as of now from what I can tell is that Wilkins will not be available for '16-'17.

Akers is far from a done deal, and I'm not going to count him as ours until the dust clears on NSD. Wilkins ultimately is the one responsible for having his classes in order; it's not like he doesn't have a private school background and a decent GPA and is incapable of managing his own affairs. Still, I'm very disappointed no one on Athletics' payroll noticed Wilkins was ONE HOUR short. We shouldn't have to babysit these guys through school, but we literally pay people to do just that, so someone other than Wilkins also seemingly mishandled the situation.

In the press realease it said 'out for the entire regular season' ... It sounded to me like if he took the correct classes and had the correct credits then he could play in the postseason after January 1... Anyone know the specifics on that ?

And the press realease was awful... The Athletic Dept didn't say 'we really fricked this one up' so to me it made light of the situation.

I'm so sick of this response that it's somehow his fault. If what is being stated is true, you can't place blame on a kid for listening to a paid advisor. Some of that academic stuff can get confusing. It happens alot and the people who this happens to aren't at fault. I know several people who thought they were about to graduate based off what was told to them by an advisor only to find out later they were a hour or two short or some class that is only offered in the fall.

Yes the adviser messed up, but you absolutely can put some of the blame on the kid. It's his life he needs to take responsibility in his education as well. Every student takes a look at the academic requirements before they start college. He should also have looked at the requirements to make sure he was on par with the graduation schedule for his degree. He is getting tens of thousands of dollars every year to be a student athlete.

If someone whose main job is to tell athletes what classes to take tells me I don't have to take a class, I'm gonna listen to them. Wilkins got hosed.

If the advisor told him to jump off a bridge, should Wilkins just blindly jump?

Exactly. Not the fault of the student at all.

shite I had something like this happen to me. I asked my advisor my final semester "so I'm good to graduate with what I am taking." They said yes you are 100% good to go.

I walk and think I'm good. Send in to get my diploma and I never here anything. I forgot about it got my job moved on did my own thing. Then about 8 months pass and I go "hey wtf" so I called the school. Found out I needed one more class.

So I came back to Oxford for a month the next summer and finished up.

Was it 100% my responsibility. Well yeah. But when the people who get paid to make sure your shite is straight tell you "you're good to go" that's all I needed to hear. And like others have said. That shite can get confusing

Coincidentally or not, the university is advertising for an open position for an academic counselor for student athletes today on its website.

Wasn't sure if I could post this but I figured since it was a one sentence quote, it would be alright. Let me know if I need to take it down.

The advisors job isn't to advise on jumping off bridges. Advising me on what classes I need to take is their job.

It's not the AA's degree, nor is it their position on the football team at stake. It's not like Wilkins was incapable of knowing on his own what is necessary for him to remain on the team. It's not like the AA was some financial analyst that has extremely specialized knowledge on which Wilkins relied.

If you can read, you should be able to determine what is necessary for you to graduate, remain on scholarship, remain on the football team, etc. From the sound of things, the AA messed up, and if it was their guiding voice that put Wilkins in this situation, there should be some sort of consequence, much as any other job would have an employee face consequences for poor performance. Though, I do know if my various advisors in undergrad gave me bad info on which I relied, it would still have been ultimately my fault for not making proper adjustments before the deadline. I oftentimes had this issue considering my second major was in Liberal Studies where my classes comprising the triple minor (3 minors + Speech randomly = LS major) often overlapped. It was up to me, not my advisors, to make sure these classes did not overlap in such a way that could jeopardize one of those minors, and therefore the major as a whole. I got bad info all the time, and those minors were all in fields in which Ole Miss is nationally known. Yes, the people who get paid to ensure our football players are doing what they need to do should be held to a higher standard than my Southern Studies advisor, but it's the same principle, and the players are still students.

Gator - I can name 4 other students at Ole Miss who were f^^ked by the advisors. The advisors just don't care, but UM will gladly take your money for an additional semester.
