You always have to be careful what you ask for because you can never be completely sure what you are going to get. Nonetheless, it's probably time for a different direction with our defensive leadership. Wommack doesn't have to be embarrassed by the process. It can be done eloquently, so to speak. As for last night, Arkansas has our number some how some way. If we catch 2 or 3 more balls at the right moment things are likely different and the conversation on this board today is much different. Our receivers were due an off game considering just how good those guys have been. All that said, we'll have to be better Saturday against LSU or we'll all be back on here calling for more heads, drastic changes and like some NUT has said, even a new head coach. Give me a break.

D. Mason seems to be able to take 2* & 3*'s and field a solid defense. Imagine what he could do with our personnel?

There was a reason why Wommack was fired from GA tech.... he sucks. Also fire Luke while we're at it. Maybe he can recruit but he is not an o-line coach. Our o-line continues to get pushed around.

Beginning of the end??? Are you kidding me?

We're some of you guys not around in 2010 or the season that shall never be spoken of again? We sucked.

We currently have a relevant team. We can play with anyone. It's not time to fire anyone. We just lost to a good team.

What are you talking about? The OL has looked much better than most thought they would this year. The OL isn't the problem.

Damn, I'm beginning to think you are Dave's son.

Mason is not a good head coach, but he has the guts to fire those who underperform. Also, and more importantly, your biggest defense of Wommack is that the personnel isn't there.

Mason may have a crappy Vandy team, but that is almost entirely based on the offensive production, which isn't on him. HE CONSISTENTLY HAS HIS DEFENSE (OF 2 AND 3 STAR KIDS) PLAYING AMAZINGLY. He knows how to coach them, he knows how to prep his D for who they play, and he rarely commits the same grievous defensive mistakes over and over (Not like Wommack who does it every year)

ETA: No way we get Mason after that road win at Georgia (WHERE HIS DEFENSIVE GAME PLAN WAS SPOT ON AND HIS DEFENSE OF 2 AND 3 STARS PLAYED WITH INCREDIBLY)

like some NUT has said

If you are talking about me, let me clarify.
The NCAA will likely hand down sanctions that will include reduced schollys. The staff will not be able to afford to miss on kids. He has a some dead weight on staff currently as far as recruiting and coaching ability.....He is going to have to get a couple of good closers on the defensive side of the ball, hopefully who are very good coaches as well.
I firmly believe we have peaked with the current coaching staff. I don't think or am I suggesting that Freeze be fired anytime soon. I am suggesting that he make some hard choices to get the program to the next level....the stakes are entirely too high not too.....He cannot pull a "Cutcliffe" and keep buddies on staff at the expense of the program

Every game, every game they play the defense is always playing really well.

Also, he had a lot of success as DC at Stanford.

You can argue that we shouldn't fire Wommack because it isn't his fault. Just don't argue that D. Mason wouldn't be a better option as DC.

The coaches job in college is to get the players to campus and then communicate/teach them to play a scheme that will help the team win.

- Is Wommack getting the kids to campus?
- Since 2014, when we had Allen, has the defensive scheme seemed to be working?
- Do you think we have talented kids that should be able to execute the scheme if properly taught/coached?

Just some things to ponder but I think I know my answer to these questions.

Mason is, and has been an amazing defensive coordinator for years and proven he's got what it takes. He's one of the few guys I would blank check. I'm beating a dead horse and have said it for two years, but we have the resources and need to hire true SEC caliber coaches to support Freeze. There's nothing holding us back except loyalty. Freeze is a killer CEO and recruiter, he just needs some help. Saban with all his ego can realize his deficiencies and hires the best supporting staff money can buy to make up for it. Hugh needs to take a play out of his handbook and do the same. We're at our max potential with the friends, family, and charity cases we have right now. All great men, no doubt, but not who we need if we want to compete long term with the big boys.

Exactly!!! I have been friends with guys I had to let go because they weren't cutting the mustard and ultimately costing me either money or reputation. Time to look at it as what the ultimate goal of the program is and do addition by subtraction.

I'll wait until he points out a Mike Singletary, Sam Mills, or trotter on that LB core. What I see is Gates and a bunch of dudes who should be playing at USM. I don't give a damn how many techniques you teach them or the scheme. The problem is talent or lack thereof.

Just curious but IYO when is there ever a good reason to fire a coach?

Bud Foster? You are joking right? That guy will never leave Tech. Plus are we going to pay a million dollars for a defensive coordinator? That's a rhetorical question. Anyone who thinks we are getting Mason is fricking crazy that guy will be making at least a million when he leaves vandy.
