Haha ok, but don't judge a book by its cover now. Or a military guy by his uniform as they say.

Are you sure he was military? I know there's a lot of false valor shite where people pose as military to get discounts and other free shite they normally wouldn't qualify for. It's pretty sick (not to mention illegal). Not sure if this is a similar type person but most people I know personally in the military have a sense of honor and integrity , not that there aren't some who don't fit the mold

I know a guy that always talks about how things were when he was in the Army. (I was in the AF so he thinks I'm receptive to his stories)

He was in for under two years before he took a voluntary discharge, during peace time, and he constantly regales me about what could have been.

Then he'll talk about how after 9/11 he went back to join again to be EOD but didn't because he didn't want to go to Iraq on principal. WTF

If I couldn't hack it in the the Army fricking Reserves, I'd probably keep my mouth shut about it.

I had a couple of older vets tell me recently that you don't deserve to work in the US if you weren't in the military.

Meanwhile, I've worked with some Vietnam special forces vets who were some of the quietest, nicest people around who you'd never know served unless they chance made a comment about it.

Go frick yourself.

Almost all veterans I know are extremely uncomfortable being recognized or talking about being in the military except around other veterans.

Except Marines. I'm pretty sure the Corp hands out bumper stickers, hats, shirts and shite at discharge.

I never understood what makes people think like this. It's not like we learned any special skills that made us better Americans.

The military has a high amount of assholes. To many think their service should provide them with free shite and everyone should kiss their asses. They give us all a bad name and I do not blame you for your decision to not work with them.

I am extremely uncomfortable about it. I'm afraid to mention it around some civilians because I don't want people to think that I want special attention. Which in reality, I was always taught not to seek to stand out, but to blend in. Really, I don't even want to be thanked even though I appreciate their gratitude. Too many fobbits and gear queers have played the veteran card and because of that, I feel like there is a stigma by some toward the vets.

I try to avoid that, too. Always awkward as hell for me when somebody says thank you for your service. I never know what I'm supposed to say

Yeah, that's why I'll only bring it up irl in conversation if I'm asked.

In my experience, those that actually served in real combat downplay their involvement and are uncomfortable with the praise they sometimes get. The ones I've come across that expect you to bow down to them are the ones that saw little to no actual fighting and just served support roles on the backlines.

I do agree with this. When I worked in public accounting preparing tax returns, the ones that tried the most to cheat on their taxes were the clergy.

You guys are killing me. The are aholes everywhere. Leaving the military was easy for me, I had a degree. It was still a challenge finding my way at first. That is ok and I didn't need anybody's help. Try to remember that for a lot of those kids, they signed up to serve believing it would be an adventure and that it would all be great. The reality is that when young enlisted in particular get out there is not much waiting for them. They go to find jobs, often back home, to find they have fallen behind their peer group in the job world. Their experiences, despite what they have been told, don't always amount to jack in the eyes of prospective employers. And they are used to a world where everybody is involved in the same things and then they end up in places where nobody looks at things quite the same way. I still miss it. I don't think the answer is to look for handouts but it is a challenge. Who cares if guys bring it up too much. I am sure all of us here have things about us that annoy or irritate others. I am disappointed that people here say they just won't have anything to do with them because some are bad apples. I got off easy during my time in the military but I know a lot who have suffered and will continue to suffer. Let's try to love our neighbor a little.
