To honor President's Week on The OTB, give us your favorite and least favorite Presidents and tell us why you like/dislike them.
I am always torn between Jefferson and Teddy Roosevelt as to my favorite. Usually, I go with Jefferson because of his influence on politics and policies for the following generations; his political theory was/is, in my opinion, second to none. He also lived such an interesting life that I love to study him. Sure, he had his flaws and at times acted in contradiction to his views (wanted weak executive branch but extended the power of the branch while in office with the La Purchase/"All men created equal", yet was a slave holder and, even though he had wanted to free all of his slaves at the end of his life, was forced to sell off his slaves to settle debts he incurred from living beyond his means), but he's someone I greatly admire.
Least favorite is also a hard one to choose. There haven't been many good presidents as of late, and there are a ton of bad ones to choose from in the past, but I usually always go with Jimmy Carter. Being from Georgia, I often doubt if any Georgian will ever be elected again because of the specter of ol' Jimmy. I'm not ashamed of him (the office of President is one that should be respected, I'll never be ashamed of it), but he was just a failure on many different fronts. There are many idealists out there, but Jimmy is an idealist to a fault. He lacked the means to deal with the energy crisis, recession/stagflation, and foreign policy issues such as the Iran hostage situation and the increase in Soviet aggression. He seems like a nice guy, but was a terrible president.

Solid choice. Definitely the only man for the job at that time and did a great job of keeping a young nation together.

Absolutely.

Favorite: Lincoln. Reason: Saved the nation.
Least favorite: Nixon. Reason: Nearly destroyed the nation, and left permanent scars on the nation's moral landscape.

You could have just said that everything is Bush's fault like the current fool does.

Favorite: Washington. He fought for what was right in the Revolutionary War, and backed it up as president by only serving two terms. No kings in this republic people!
Least: Obama. Sheesh, where do I begin.

Tough call on a favorite: Think I have to go with Lincoln though. Believed in equality and took the first real step towards it. Ended up paying with his life.
Least goes to James Buchanan. From Dred Scott case, to secession, to Bleeding Kansas, to Panic of 1857, Buchanan is one of the worst.
I think in the future, people will look back and see Obama as an average president.

Depends on who writes the history books.

Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhh. In the Lincoln/Douglas debates, Lincoln viewed blacks as subhuman and his plan for the slaves after the war involved shipping them back to Africa. The Emancipation Proclamation was more a political/military tactical move than it was about his belief in equality.
I think most everyone (racists aside) will agree that Emancipation was a GREAT achievement and moment for our nation, but there were definitely ulterior motives aside from the kindness of Lincoln's heart.

I thought Lincoln was indifferent towards equality?

Favorite: Teddy. He lived the outdoors life that I wish I could have.
Least: Jimmy, the guy can't decide on anything. He's so wishy washy.

But a lot of stuff today is Obamas fault

No he actually did not. I think he visited his ranch less than 5 times ever.
Also the mofo tried to kill off American football. Will NEVER forgive him for that.

I mean of course. You don't play politics being a nice guy. You also can't just run over opposition without a super majority. If he had tried to get equal social rights for blacks at the time, his emancipation would have been shut down right there. Anyone who studies politics knows that you can't always say what you believe if you want support.
Lincoln was a realist. I haven't seen anything of weight about shipping slaves back to africa. I know that he suggested they live separately, due to the animosity that was sure to follow, but from what I gathered that meant the territories to the west.
