Beaumont is not huge, it is close to Houston, Lafayette, NOLA, Lamar is there, so there is some sports options other than the Houston colleges, aTm, etc.
Plus if I lived in Beaumont, I would probably be doing more than just staying there, as I would probably go over to the Bay in Mississippi a lot also.

Ft. Walton Beach, Florida:
Nearness to Commissary, O Club, Marina, Beach Club, & other facilities at Hurlburt Field & Eglin AFB.
Vacation in Cuba, Nat'l Parks & Battlefields.
Close enough to still drive to MState for Games.

insanely hot with no rain every summer for 4 months
This is a perk, IMO.
Living outside of Texas made it clear to me how much I despise cold/wet weather
I hate wearing layers/coats/gloves, I don't enjoy shoveling/driving in snow/and having long stretches of rainy/overcast weather sours my mood for some reason.

Yeah I'm definitely retiring at a beach in Florida somewhere.

I plan to retire to Tuscaloosa. Family land.
BUT - if I had my druthers, I'd buy a place on the gulf in Gulf Shores

Texas in the summer is the same thing, just the inverse. Stuck inside because it is so hot outside you can barely breathe and instantly sweat, paying out the rear end to water the lawn only for it to slowly die anyway, unable to make house repairs or work in the lawn without keeling over. The heat makes me angry just as the cold and darkness of winter makes other people depressed. I hate sweating. Unlike winter where you can bundle up, there's no escaping the heat in Texas in the summer other than staying in the air conditioning, which results in expensive electric bills and tends to break, requiring expensive repairs, and cabin fever.

My first choice would be Bend, Oregon
My brother!
Bend is the perfect town. It's like a movie version of the 1950s. You go there and there are packs of clean cut kids running around at dusk through the parks, jumping off the bridges into the lake and having fun with no one concerned for their well-being because there's no reason to worry; it has breweries; it has nature and exercise opportunities, everywhere; skiing is close by; there are lots of good restaurants; it's the ideal size; the weather is great. It's like the Twilight Zone in that somehow you are slipped into an alternate universe of perfection and you are like, wait, is this real? That neighborhood of big craftsman houses across the lake/river from downtown... holy moly, I would legitimately stab someone to be able to live there.

Exactly. I like the heat

Like I said, I hate doing this
I sweat fast either way in any environment, so that's not a deal breaker for me I just hate everything about the feeling of being cold. I hate playing sports when it's cold. I hate going outside when it's cold. Don't mind being outside when it's hot and sunny.

cabin fever
More people get this in the winter than the summer, and it ain't close. The colder the winter, the worse cabin fever gets.
You can keep your frozen giblets. Gimme the sunshine and heat

I used to be the same, man. But a few years ago it was like a switch flipped and everything reversed for me. Maybe it is related to when I got heat stroke in the jungle in Costa Rica. The heat just makes me angry now. Maybe it is just me getting old.

It's all good. Different strokes
Maybe if I'd lived in TX or the South longer growing up, I'd have gotten tired of it or just wanted a change in climate. Lived in enough places to know what I like beyond a shadow of a doubt.
Ah that makes sense, actually.
I've never had heatstroke and never sunburn, so the heat is just like whatever to me, I guess.
That feeling of having cold hands when I lived further north just never set right w/ me. Negative experiences do color perception.

University Park Highland Park you know where the people like dubya and rich oil tycoons live. In places it makes Southfork look like a sharecroppers shack.

I do think San Francisco would be a climate that would get old. It's always slightly chilly. Always. I think eventually the lack of any real season variation from 'chilly' would gradually drive you mad. I could be wrong though.
Posted on 8/5/16 at 2:38 pm to Cooter Davenport
I could see that. SF would be perfect for someone who likes consistency, I guess.
Never been. Furthest west I've ventured is Vegas. Need to check it out sometime. Maybe for a Spurs/Warriors game or something. Can't think of another reason I'd wanna go out there.

I would take Pebble and Carmel by the Sea over San Fran. I do not know what it is, but San Fran just does not seem that great of a place to retire to. Visit and spend some years while in a working sector yes, but retirement, nah.

Sports
History
Architecture ( I like Telegraph Hill)
Presidio
The only places North (which I would scream fuss and bitch about)of my present location I would retire to are
Mackinac Island
Lake of the Ozarks/Table Rock Lake
Corolla Island
