the steady paycheck is nice. Having to get up and go to work 5 days a week is not quite as nice.

If you don't do drugs / haven't done them and don't plan on doing them, look into working at a nuclear power plant. Most people make upwards of 6 figures and having an engineering will give you a leg up and help you compete with the people coming out of the navy who have worked on nuclear reactors.

I'm about a year out of college. No savings yet. Gotta pay the student loans down first.

2.5 isn't exactly what people want to hear, I am just being honest. I would look into an internship or something if you don't have one yet. I left my gpa off my resume and never got asked what it was so I would go that route if I were you.

I agree. I wouldn't ask a young engineering applicant their GPA in an interview but I probably wouldn't interview one with that GPA on their resume.

As for your pay, it never really felt different to me. I have always made sure not to approach the line of living paycheck to paycheck. As my income went up, the costs of owning a home, having a stay at home wife and a kid all keep rising faster than my income. You might actually start feeling more poor as you get older depending on your situation. Also, M.E. isn't one of the higher paying engineering disciplines. Keep that in mind when comparing to others of difference disciplines.

Being a DINK (dual income no kids) is the only time I have felt great with regards to money. Now it will be at least 18 years before I get to experience that again.

2.5 GPA

That GPA isn't very appealing, but it doesn't matter once you get the degree. Leave the GPA off of your résumé.

Some of the people that graduated in engineering with me are dumb fricks. It scares the shite out of me that they could possibly be signing off on projects that could endanger many, many lives on a daily basis.

Finding a job nowadays is all about who you know, not what you know. It's all politics man.

All depends on the person. Having kids later enables you to do some things and pay down debt early but you aren't making great money during that time.

If you have kids early, they are gone by the time you ARE making great money. Then you have both time and money to really enjoy life while not being too old to enjoy it.

i have a lot of regrets. my kids aren't one of them, but i would have liked just ONE year out of college with work, savings, and free time before we jumped into that world.

if you're just 22, then you're fine. I had my first at 22.

try and get some form of an internship if you can, go do interviews even if you don't think you will take a job. I had never done an interview for a legit job (non minimum wage or part time) and probably missed out on a couple offers because I didn't know what I was doing. Gotta tell them "oh yes I want to live here for years and years", you just figure out how to answer the questions right after a couple tries.

Also be sure you are filling out lots of online applications and all that the semester before you graduate.

Mechanical engineering, and I have made decent grades I know a 2.5 doesn't sound that great.

Once you get your first job and get experience your GPA doesn't matter anymore. I didn't make great grades but now that I have applicable real world experience on my résumé nobody gives a shite what grades I made. Have an open minded search and apply for jobs you think you would excel in and can advance from. Money will come with that
