I think it should be 19. At least keep 18 year old seniors from buying it.

This was always my thought if it was lowered. Keeps the seniors from providing booze to the whole high school after their birthday.

At 18 you can

But you can't buy alcohol or check into a hotel

During my stint in the military I used to think that this was one of the dumbest laws out there.. Being older and wiser, I believe that this is actually a good law.. Reason being is because some of the junior Marines made some of the DUMBEST choices and decisions out there(myself included).. At 18 we think we're invincible and especially after boot camp... At 21, I still made dumb decisions and choices, just not at the alarming regularity of an 18 year old Marine...

You're going to have to source that, or you don't have a valid argument.

Not in every state. A few are 19. In Hawaii, it's 21.

I've always agreed with this ... and back when I was coming up 18 was the legal drinking age for beer and wine, but not liquor.

Anyways, you can think MADD for raising the legal drinking age and they had some pretty strong statistics to support their claim that 18-20 year olds were having a lot of fatal car crashes in this country at the time. An inordinate amount as a matter of fact. I seem to remember it was something like 35% of vehicular fatalities were related to 18-20 year old impaired drivers at the time.

ETA: I lived in Europe for a number of years, off and on, in my adult life and I get what you are saying about it being different there. But they also have unlimited speed limits on some of their major highways and when a drunk wrecks everyone dies.

In Italy, they put wine in the baby's milk or dip their fingers in the wine and let the babies drink wine almost from birth in that fashion ... so yeah, different cultures do different things.

Our youths, here in America, have always been a little bit on the wild side ... and that's been going on for decades now, if not centuries.

ETAA: I blame it on the Irish ... especially the ginger Irish.

With uber, the excuse to drink and drive should almost be gone. If we had more public transportation it would alleviate the issue as well. And this isn't just for the youth or for drinking reasons. Public transportation in the US blows.

I'm not sure. I'd be in favor of selling psilocybin in stores like in Holland.

US should raise the drinking age to 25. Enough idiots on the road who have been drinking.

Birth control has been seriously available for 50 years now. That's two generations. The teenagers these days, chances are their grandmothers were on the pill. There's just no damn excuse for teenage pregnancy anymore.

Yeah me too. I get the sentiment that if an 18 year old is an adult, then they should be able to drink. However, just thinking back to high school, no doubt in my mind that giving an 18 year old senior access to alcohol would basically be giving the entire high school access to alcohol. I drank when I was underage, but it wasn't like I had a buddy who could supply us with an unlimited amount.

I will say, the Europeans drive much less often than Americans. But that gets into our outrageously shitty travel infrastructure
