I've been living abroad in Prague for the past 8 months and first thing i have noticed is that in Europe they don't treat alcohol like it is taboo. families teach their kids at a young age (around 12-13) how to drink responsibly and don't get black out drunk when they do drink and go out. if an 18 year old can vote, pay taxes, and fight for his country, why can't you order a beer at 18?

I agree. They can also be charged as an adult for a crime as well at 18.

At 18 you can
- go to war
- go to a strip club
- buy any gun except a handgun
- Vote
- Buy Tobacco

But you can't buy alcohol or check into a hotel

makes no logical sense. it's not a coincidence that since raising the age to 21 back in '85 more alcohol related deaths have occurred.

It's about the only European policy I would be in favor of adopting.

How does lowering the legal drinking age help parents teach their children proper drinking while young and at home?

No, what's really needed is a nationwide law that says giving your child alcohol in your home is perfectly legal. To my knowledge, I think only about 2/3 of states currently allow this.

But again, as with most things, given said law, the responsibility for teaching alcohol consumption falls with parents.

So yeah, really, laws aren't gonna change shite. The European countries that you visited have parents that engage, and there is the big difference. Not the law.

I think it should be 19. At least keep 18 year old seniors from buying it.

I love a good drink, but I wish we could get rid of alcohol and replace it with something more logical like weed.

Teens and 20 somethings cannot handle drinking, I would much prefer dealing with them being stoned than drunk.

Raise the drinking age to 25

Religion has more to do with the way we treat alcohol in this country more than legislation, especially in the south.

Having a beer in public really doesn't carry a stigma anywhere else in the country save for Utah.

I've always agreed with this ... and back when I was coming up 18 was the legal drinking age for beer and wine, but not liquor.

Can you purchase tobacco products at the age of 18? I honestly do not know.

Anyways, you can think MADD for raising the legal drinking age and they had some pretty strong statistics to support their claim that 18-20 year olds were having a lot of fatal car crashes in this country at the time. An inordinate amount as a matter of fact. I seem to remember it was something like 35% of vehicular fatalities were related to 18-20 year old impaired drivers at the time.

ETA: I lived in Europe for a number of years, off and on, in my adult life and I get what you are saying about it being different there. But they also have unlimited speed limits on some of their major highways and when a drunk wrecks everyone dies.

In Italy, they put wine in the baby's milk or dip their fingers in the wine and let the babies drink wine almost from birth in that fashion ... so yeah, different cultures do different things.

Our youths, here in America, have always been a little bit on the wild side ... and that's been going on for decades now, if not centuries.

ETAA: I blame it on the Irish ... especially the ginger Irish.

No argument here. America and her prudish tendencies are annoying.

Because conservatives love the idea of predominantly teaching abstinence like a bunch of rubes, so you end up with kids that are stupid when it cums to safe sex.

There's a few exceptions but for the most part you have to be 21. There's also a few that will allow you to sign a waiver but that list is also pretty small.
