Yes, I would recommend mental therapy for the latter group but for those with birth defects, it's a much more complicated and tragic situation.

Can you give me a breakdown on those who are trans by way of birth defect versus those who think they're trans? Is it an 80/20 thing? 20/80?

It wasn't an issue two years ago. Not on any scale. It's the new thing that liberals now have believed all their lives now that they read last week's piece in the Atlantic or wherever.

I agree that Transgenderism was needlessly brought into the public arena just recently. There is a new group, popularly referred to as SJWs on this site and others, that goes beyond liberalism and is doing more harm than good by forcing issues such as this into public discussion when none was necessary.

A great deal of damage was done at Mizzou by these people after ridiculous accusations against phantom racists and supposedly unresponsive administrators. They co-opt popular movements such as civil rights efforts.

That's what they've done with the LGBT campaign for civil rights. With the Supreme Court's ruling for marriage equality last June, the final big hurdle was crossed in this country for civil rights based on sexual orientation. Smaller obstacles still stand in the way of the full exercise of these rights but they will fall just as they did after the Civil Rights Act was passed.

Familiarity breeds acceptance as people learn that their family members, neighbors and colleagues with differences pose no threats to them or to society. A live and let live mindset prevails.

The issue is so muddled and the debate so hot that precise numbers for Transgenderism are not currently known, or even possible. If we break out numbers for GID and Transexualism, however, we can see that they're tiny.

Treatment for GID in children and sex reassignment surgeries in adults indicates an approximate 0.1-0.2% of the population is affected. For Transvestitism, which is regrettably included under the Transgenderism label, the numbers can't be reasonably assessed because of the shame and guilt that prevents people, mostly heterosexual men, from adding themselves to statistics by seeking treatment.

Here are a couple of short but well-written articles that might give you an idea of the current state of Transgenderism in the U.S.:

This whole argument is ridiculous. What about women who are uncomfortable with the idea of men using the ladies room when they are present?

The whole "justice" movement reminds me of the greatest political song ever written.

There is unrest in the forest
There is trouble with the trees
For the maples want more sunlight
And the oaks ignore their pleas

The trouble with the maples
(And they're quite convinced they're right)
They say the oaks are just too lofty
And they grab up all the light
But the oaks can't help their feelings
If they like the way they're made
And they wonder why the maples
Can't be happy in their shade

There is trouble in the forest
And the creatures all have fled
As the maples scream 'Oppression!'
And the oaks just shake their heads

So the maples formed a union
And demanded equal rights
'The oaks are just too greedy
We will make them give us light'
Now there's no more oak oppression
For they passed a noble law
And the trees are all kept equal
By hatchet, axe and saw
