17 stars on a Confederate Flag? For shame.

I know, I know. And they're not even brown.

Precisely my thought. If we're going to add baggage, both religious and cultural, to the word "marriage", strike the word from any legal documents and codes and make all marriages "civil unions" for the purpose of government-controlled benefits. If people in civil unions want to call themselves "married", that's entirely up to them. If, for instance, the government is giving a couple a tax break, the phrase "civil union" is far more appropriate anyway.
If this had been done early on, a lot of the conflict surrounding this issue could have been avoided. The word marriage originated from religious rituals and should have been called something else when government began to tax it via a legal contract license. It wasn't, therefore the strife.
However, the struggle is over and the word is still extant in both religious and secular services. Civil unions would have been better from a legal contract viewpoint but marriage will persist. I can't see it ever changing.

Exactly.

It is a damn treasure trove. Between the flag, Confederate memorials, and now gay marriage, I think the PoliBoard may hit critical mass when some of the posters start drinking this evening.

And today's ruiling doesn't stop that. The Southern Baptist Seminary has already come out and said that gay marriages won't be performed in Southern Baptist churches.
Right. It sounded like you were saying the govt doesn't have any role in deciding who would have benefits of a marriage/civil union, which they should, imo. I'm talking about hospital visitation rights, etc.
The irony of it all is that it's almost always those that preach about the govt having too much reach into our lives wanting the govt to tell someone else how to morally live their life.
Seperate the two and there's no issue.

I'll wade through it when I have more time this evening.
In the meantime, I still say we should be following the European model. People in many European countries have civil wedding ceremonies for the purposes of being married in the eyes of the government. They also have religious wedding ceremonies so that they are married in the eyes of the church. Totally separate. Can have one without the other. This would solve a lot of our problems.

Tread lightly.

I'm about as far from a socialist or communist as you can get! But I think keeping religious marriage and legal (government) marriage separate is the right idea. The government got into the marriage business for tax purposes, largely - a civil issue.

Yell leaders are so pumped right now!

How is that any different than what we do here except for what you call it?

Popped in there for a split second and the first thread I saw said "How do we reverse gay marriage?"

As I understand it, they aren't connected. A minister can't officiate a civil marriage in some European countries. Completely separate.

So?
There's still marriage in the eyes of the church and marriage in the eyes of the government here. It seems strange who presides over each ceremony would have made this a non-issue.
