Here's where the article makes a calculated switch:

quote:

While it’s certainly true that a number of factors contribute to the high rates of gun violence in the U.S., a comparison of state laws versus rates of shooting deaths does show a correlation

It's flim flammery.

So we learned people in rural states are better shots and/or have limited access to healthcare. Groundbreaking stuff there.

I was about to say a friend told me that actually a lot of firearms are filtered through Africa and even China on freighters.

I'm sure many come from America, but I'm also sure a whole hell of a lot of the cheap AKs are coming from Africa.

They'll get the firearms one way or the other...

Well, if only the Mexican government had put the most strict laws down, right?

The whole myth got started because the ATF said 90% of the guns recovered from crime scenes that they'd traced had origins in the US.

What they declined to admit at first (wonder why? ) was that they'd only attempted to trace a very small subset of recovered weapons and in many cases those traced were chosen because it was felt they likely originated in the US.

Since the carefully-worded-to-avoid-an-outright-lie statement, others have produced estimates of between 10% and 40% come from here.

As you said, most of the cartel weaponry comes from other places and would be as illegal in the US as it is in Mexico.

Your article included suicides and gun deaths by intervention I.e if a person kills someone in self defense then it is part of the statistic.

It's a misleading article. Compare gun homicides and the rankings change drastically
