Chicago is in the state of Illinois and it has pretty strict gun laws. So.... what are you laughing at, champ? His point is valid. Strict gun laws don't necessarily mean gun violence will decrease.

Maybe try reading the article?

Firearms are super illegal to purchase in Mexico, and hey, would you look at that?

Are you trying to compare Mexico to the United States?

Posts a study that assumes all states are basically the same.

Gets mad when another poster makes the same type of comparison between countries.

The knee-jerk reaction to ANY thread about gun control. But, but CHICAGO!

Duh? I'm not an advocate for strict gun control.

Seriously, argues from a microcosm and then gets upset because it disproves him.

Culture has more to do with homicide and firearm rates than do laws. People will find ways to get firearms even if the laws tell them not to.

I've been told by many on this board that America can't be compared to other countries.

It can be compared as long as you control for a lot of differing factors.

The same idea applies to comparisons between states.

Actually, in terms of gun violence, NYC is pretty good. Light years past where we were in the early 90s when it was practically Mogadishu

This. New York is extremely safe for a large city. I can see the argument being made with Chicago or DC, but using NYC is a very bad example.

We should lighten up on Stonehog, we don't want him to cry like Nancy Kerrigan to the admins again.

Your thread is...

States with stricter gun laws have fewer gun related deaths

I showed with FBI statistics from the FBI website, that 3/5 of gun murders are from states with very strict gun control laws. If I had continued, New York would have been the next on the list.

Great point. Why have laws at all? People will just break them anyway if they really want to.

Damn, I would have thought that Mexico would have had a much higher rate than us.
