I've had my fair share of piss your pants in encounters in the woods from coyotes howling in 10 degree weather at night in Boone while I was hunting from a atop a hay bale to walking up on a 350 pound black bear while I was going in for early season bow hunting and staring her down at 10 yards no joke. But one thing made me scared enough to the point when I actually pissed my pants while sleeping in a hammock 10 ft above the ground in Canada.

Me and the boys decided to go on a one last hoorah trip after graduating high school to the boundary waters in Canada and portage for two weeks. Fishing was unbelievable, scenery was breath taking, and the northern lights are indescribable. One night we all were camping hanging in the trees and had heard a decent amount of rustling on in the forest floor didn't think too much about it until it got really close and we all were hanging in our hammocks wondering WTF until we heard some timber wolves howl in the distant and the ones right under us answered back and I have never been so surprised and scared in my life. It was so damn loud I honest to God pissed myself its safe to say we didn't sleep or move the rest of the night! I never prayed so hard for the sun to come up in my life!!!

In all seriousness, when I was in middle school I woke up late one night to someone in the house quietly crying and talking on the phone. Mom, Dad, my brother - they were all asleep. It was my older sister. I could hear her crying in the kitchen and I didn't immediately get out of bed because I was terrified for some reason.

After a few minutes, I muscled up the courage to see what was going on. I quietly walked into the kitchen. My sister was sitting on the kitchen floor just below the telephone, the telephone cord stretching from the wall to her ear. She didn't know I was standing behind her. I could hear her friend screaming through the phone assuring my sister that help was coming.

I just stood there in shock as my sister said through tears, "I no longer want to live. I've taken a lot of pills. I just want it to end. I want to die."

It was like a dream. No, scratch that...it was a nightmare. I looked over at the medicine cabinet and noticed several open medicine bottles with pills scattered all over the kitchen counter.

My sister's friend yelled that she would be right over and hung up the phone. My sister dropped the phone on the floor, hunched over, and kept crying. I was frozen by the gravity of what was unfolding before me - my sister was attempting suicide.

I must've made a sound because my sister turned around. She looked stunned when she noticed I was standing behind her. Even though I thought she was going to die, for some reason I didn't run to wake up my parents.

I was in shock.

My sister stood up and we embraced. I said, "I love you," and that was it. I couldn't think of anything else to say. We just hugged for what seemed like forever and we both cried on each other's shoulders.

Several minutes later her friend burst into the house screaming and crying, grabbed my sister, woke up my parents, and within a flash everyone except me and my brother had left the house to rush my sister to the hospital. One minute the only sound in the house was my sister's quiet weeping, the next minute the house was in chaos and panic, the minute after that the house was silent again.

It was the worse silence you can imagine. It was silence permeated by the dark thickness of potential death and real fear.

That experience haunts me to this day and will haunt me for the rest of my life.

Standing waste deep in water headed to the duck blind in absolutely pitch black dark. No moon and absolute black.

10 feet away a beaver slaps it's tail.

Absolutely scared the piss out of me.

I'll tell the story my uncle told me many years ago. He was a Boy Scout and then advanced to the level above that, I think they were called Explorer Scouts? Anyway, on camping trips with local Boy Scout troops, my uncle would secretly carry along an old metal house trash can. In the bottom of the can was a small forced hole with inserted screw end. Attached to the screw tip was a strong string or cord. At the camp site when the last fire was put out and before the young campers fell asleep, he would dash into the woods about fifty feet or so with his trash can. He would then grab the string with a handkerchief and pull on it from bottom of can to top, letting the friction of cloth produce a loud eerie sound amplified by the can. It scared the crap out of all the scouts he said. Whew.

Across the pond a blind door opened and slam shut. Made me think I was about to be under fire.

I was deer hunting in Mississippi with my dad and uncle. It was around dusk and I was waiting for my dad to come get me so we could walk back to the camp together...heavily wooded, leaves on ground, we were hunting with shotguns and buckshot.
My uncle walks up behind me and asks if I was ready to go...he was 1 foot from me when he spoke...I didn't hear him approach...at all, scared the shite out of me.
He learned how to be silent during his time in Vietnam.

Didn't necessarily hear anything, but we have a ranch up high in the Mexican plains. I shite y'all not, but one of our neighbors 3 miles away swears he saw a chupacabra run across his fields once when he was on his tractor . He claims it jumped into the ditch and when he went looking for it with his old arse Winchester rifle, it was gone.

Dude likes to drink heavily when he is on his tractor, so there's a good chance he probably saw a hairy feral hog....but still.

Mountain lion outside of Tucson. Like a human screaming

Was walking to a deer stand in Seymour, Texas around 4am. I heard something in the brush to my right, and when I shined the flashlight there were about 40 eyes looking at me. I had walked through a frick ton of coyotes to the stand, and only realized it about 20 yards from the stand. I closed the door to the stand, and my God the howls that followed. The proximity and number of coyotes scared the frick out of me.

I'm glad I was alone though bc the morning before my fiance was with me, but decided she wanted to sleep in the second morning.

Need to add that driving to the stand that morning, I saw the biggest deer I have ever seen by far in my life, so I was hyped and somewhat mentally preoccupied on top of everything else.

Hiking through the woods in Yellowstone, on the way to a bonfire party on Lake Yellowstone. A fellow employee hid in the woods off the trail & imitating a grizzly roaring, loud & long & real sounding, scared the pee out of all 6 of us.

A few years ago a highschool buddy of mine went on a hunting trip with his brother and their grandfather they were trying to track a huge buck one of them had hit. He claims this was the biggest buck he'd ever seen in his life though his dad and grandfather had told him of stories of big ones they'd bagged this was the first time he'd seen one this large. Anyway it was starting to get real late with the sun setting so they decided to call it a day and head back to camp after being unable to find any trace of the buck other than a few tracks on the way back they stopped for a short breather when they heard clear as day a woman's voice yelling "PLEASE HELP ME..........PLEASE I'M OVER HERE " the police and few other folks told him it was probably a Panther/Mountain Lion since their screams sounds like a woman being murdered. but he insists that this was someone in trouble he says he always wonder's what if he'd gone to investigate the screams himself . he hates talking about it
