It can't be freezing rain if it's not below freezing.

But did Skoff change the forecast?

If it was below freezing, it wouldn't be rain. Freezing rain falls as liquid and then freezes later.

But again it's not below 32 and the ground is still too warm for it to freeze.

Surface temps are below freezing, warmer air aloft.

It's warmer air aloft. The great enemy of southern snow. Basically the denser cold air goes to the surface first and if the cold air mass is deep enough it fill in that warm nose a couple thousand feet up.

So you get liquid near the surface and it lands as rain and then freezes on the surface.

ETA: Obviously it's just rain if the surface is above freezing too.

Kentucky will get the brunt of the snow. We're due for about 3" tonight and a foot of the fluffy tomorrow.

I'm happy we're getting the snow and not what Tennessee and North Carolina are going to see tomorrow - ice. Most of those two states are going to get a dangerous coating.

Just woke up for a minute and we have about 1.5-2 on the ground already after the first "light band". If we're going to get that 2 inches an hour with the next we're going to get every bit of 10 inches I think.

Yeah, Louisville and Lexington are getting hit pretty hard. The roads are nearly impassable for anything other than 4-wheel drive, and getting worse. I'll take the fluffy and cold temps over ice any day, though. Poor Tennessee is going to get it.

I was too busy enjoying Mardi Gras in NOLA and had no idea this was coming. Good thing I'm loaded up on canned foods.

Starting to get a little rain and I was guessing about the 20 degree drop it's more like 15. Oh well we'll probably just rain out in an hour or two and I get to watch Netflix all afternoon

It doesn't look like we're going to get a lot of rain but just enough to make it irritatingly muddy to work in

Dumb arse truck in front of me earlier about made me get screwed over on a hill. Going up and he decides he is actually going to fricking stop making me stop behind him... He has 4wd and was on a less steep spot so he just keeps going... me in my front wheel drive car then starts the backwards slide while trying to go forwards... Forced to back back down the hill and get another running start.

Summary, if you are driving on ice, don't fricking stop if people are behind you. 5-10 mph is plenty fine to be able to tell if you actually need to stop.
