i agree it's been going on for a long time now but for some reason the shooting has really raised the want for removal of the flag

I don't know about Mississippi but people have been protesting the removal of the confederate flag in SC for a while now. I went to a protest with my church in 2007 (it was MLK day, and I was forced to go. I was pissed.) It's only recently caught on in the national media thanks to the shootings.

I could see that as a legitimate gripe if they were still flying the flag on the statehouse like they used to, but that is no longer the case, and I'm sure this has already been discussed ad nauseam

Oh dear God, it has

We've had 4-5 threads about it up here, and of course the poliboard downstairs has been soused with threads on the subject

Can't get away from it, I guess.

Well just forget I mentioned it then. This isn't really what I wanted to discuss on my return anyway

HELL NO.

We already put this to a popular vote.

Had the Magnolia Flag been an option, the vote may have been different...

I must say today was the first time I've ever posted on the poliboard, and it is a struggle. It's amazing how many crazy people there are. This board is much more refreshing.

Haven't read the rest of the thread but... please, for the love of God, change it tomorrow.

I don't live in Mississippi anymore but it needs to be changed... hell, it needed to be changed years ago (and probably would have been if the "new" flag years back hadn't been hideously ugly).

On both sides of any issue, and in nearly every thread. It's a damn madhouse

That's why I try to limit my trips downstairs only to the times when I'm bored At least up here folks try to get along for the most part.

Like I said the flag has historical significance and that is it's proper place. There are to many things in this world that represent something to one person or group and something entirely different to another person or group. I know this will be unpopular but if we keep removing things that hurt someone's feelings we are going to have nothing.

Please don't take this as me supporting racism or bigotry all things from the past have their place and some things we need to keep around if for nothing else than to remember so the mistakes are never repeated.

Oh we are in complete agreement there

It's not about eradication. First off, that's impossible, and secondly, even if it were, folks who were so inclined would just find another symbol to which to assign their views.

I concur.

I just don't care for it being celebrated/lauded.

We're on the same page

Yes or no and you can add why if you wish.

No because there are more important things our elected officials should be focusing on.

I say yes. We have to change the flag. I'm very proud to be a Mississippian but our flag is embarrassing.

Honestly, I am indifferent to it. The last thing I care about is what some Europeans or far left Californians think of our flag.

If I had a choice though I would change it because I think it's ugly as shite how it is now.

Keep it. When SCOTUS approves gay marriage, the South will need a new flag when it secedes again.

Flags don't affect my life. If the flag is changed or the issue dies down unresolved, my life will not be affected. So really, I couldn't give two shits either way.

It's like the Colonel Reb petition. If he comes back, great. If he doesn't, my Grove and gameday experiences shall not be altered.

It doesn't offend me, but then again I'm a white, Christian, heterosexual male from a successful and educated Southern family, so I'm not exactly in the demographic of those that are offended by it. There's not much in mainstream society that offends my demographics. I'll give someone shite for saying GD because I don't like it and it's like fingernails on a chalkboard to me. Same goes for when I hear someone say "retard." I am fortunate enough to not have that condition nor does anyone in my family, but I work a lot with special needs children and find it pompous and arrogant to poke fun at such amazing people.

Sorry for ranting, TL;DR is I'm a crackerass so I'm not offended by the flag, but I could not care less what happens to it either way. My great-great-grandaddy REL would be so ashamed

Haven't been downstairs in months, there's no use attempting to have reasonable discussions there, I couldn't help but make a mockery of the place, which got me banned, several times.

No. The flag predates the rise in Confederate symbolism during the Civil Rights Era. If you create a favorable business policy that's forward-thinking and do something to help the healthcare situation in such an poverty-stricken area, new residents and higher-paying jobs will come, regardless of the flag. There are Nike factories in Vietnam for frick's sake.

The swastika predates the Nazi party. It was originally a religious symbol. I don't see many people rocking that anymore though.

If we were to decide to change, however, the secession era flag would be a great way to keep our history and culture represented in a more educational-style way without being associated directly with 20th century racism.

Yes

I love my state as well..i think it's just time to part with it. It represents too much of a past which is so far from what Mississippi has become.
