Another great move by President Obama. Hopefully this will help to build some trust between the police and minorities.

quote:

WASHINGTON — President Obama on Monday will ban the federal provision of some types of military-style equipment to local police departments and sharply restrict the availability of others, administration officials said.

The ban is part of Mr. Obama’s push to ease tensions between law enforcement and minority communities in reaction to the crises in Baltimore; Ferguson, Mo.; and other cities.

He is taking the action after a task force he created in January decided that police departments should be barred from using federal funds to acquire items that include tracked armored vehicles, the highest-caliber firearms and ammunition, and camouflage uniforms. The ban is part of a series of steps the president has made to try to build trust between law enforcement organizations and the citizens they are charged with protecting.

The same people accusing him of opening FEMA camps and federalizing law enforcement are crying about this.

Is it just me or is that dumb?

Every now and again he does something I can agree with. Much needed move.

Meh... We already have most of what we need. Just waiting on those C-130 Spectre's to show up.

Everyone getting shot is being done so by an average patrolman with nothing but a pistol. This will make absolutely no difference.

Did you even read the article?

This isn't just about white cops shooting black kids, it's also going to curtail some wasteful government spending. Small town police forces are getting federal money for things they don't need.

Can I go ahead and get a rumor going that Obama plans on giving all that incoming war stuff to ISIS and African-American County Sheriffs only?

We have some nice vehicles in Joplin. Don't even need them. Crime is not high, nobody shoots at cops, only gang is a white gang called "Joplin Honkies". Guess it's just for show.

He has created an atmosphere rant promotes riots and NOW he'll be restricting the ability of locals to control the riots THAT WILL CONTINUE!

Hey you stupid fricking dumb arse, we aren't against them having equipment, we are against them having the liberal fricking laws where they can steal from us, or invade our homes, or kill our pets, with NO repercussions.

This guys is so fricking out of touch with reality, yet you people applaud this move? There are some blind voters in this country, and they are easily fooled. Geeez

People become cops because they are too socially dysfunctional to get by on personality and motivation. They were bullied in school or failed at academics and sports and any other usable and marketable thing you can pick up. The fact that someone is wanting to limit these dipshits from playing out their paramilitary fantasies sounds good to me.

This.

I can see the need in large cities, but in small towns, there is zero need for an armored personnel carrier, machine guns, and rocket propelled grenades.

quote:

Lynwood Yates, a police chief from Morven, Georgia, is probably the most over-prepared police officer in the country. His small town has fewer than 700 residents. It also has no water deeper than a few inches, yet Yates has equipped himself with three boats, scuba gear, and rescue rafts. He also picked up a $200,000 decontamination machine, which he hopes to fix (it needs $100,000 worth of repairs) in case of a terrorist attack. He can also respond to that hypothetical attack with his Humvee or armored personnel carrier.

quote:

Augusta, Maine has kitted its officers with $1,500 tactical vests. The last time an officer was killed by gunfire there was in the 19th century. That shows a lack of ambition compared to the $300,000 drone in use by the sheriff’s department in Montgomery County, Texas, or the high-tech blimp being put to use in Utah.

LINK

he "formed a SWAT team, arming it with surplus military rifles, a Humvee and an armored personnel carrier."

quote:

Police Chief Lynwood Yates, of the 700-person town of Morven, Ga., told AP that
Yates said he could "take my guys and the training they have, the equipment we have, and we could shut this town down" and "completely control everything." Seeking to avoid "over-policing" the population and giving the appearance of "an occupying army," the chief said he's had some of the military equipment painted non-military colors.

Considering it was his attorney general who was spearheading the program to get military hardware to all these small town cops, I guess I'll give the president a well deserved golf clap for his decision to solve the problem he created. Bravo.

The U.S. has provided 610 mine-resistant armored trucks, known as MRAPs, across the country, nearly all since August 2013, including at least nine in Los Angeles County, according to Michelle McCaskill, a spokeswoman for the Defense Logistics Agency.
