Buy a 22 auto. Then take safety and shooting classes. Teaches you what you need to know.
22 bullets are the cheapest ammo you can buy.
After you have passed the course then talk to your instructor about a 9mm or a 40 cal. Neither would be too large for a woman who knows how to shoot. My youngest girl can shoot a 1911 colt .45 about as we'll as I can. She weights 105/110. So anyone can do it if you burn enough powder.
Also if you want to sell a pistol you can get your money back.

.38 Airweight, or something similar.
Reliable and hard to f-up. Plus, the round is man stopper.

Springfield XD Subcompact in 40 caliber
Ruger LCR in 38 Special
I own both of these pistols, both are easily concealed and lightweight.

My friend's wife owns a Glock .45 sub compact.
I would highly recommend it for anyone with small hands.

After you purchase, you'll want to go on record as losing it in a boating accident. Just an FYI

Then why'd you post a picture of a springfield?

Very nice. Lightweight and accurate.
Another gun I like, and I don't know if it's been mentioned, is the H & K P2000.
Comes in 9MM and .40cal

Would highly reccomend you go to a gun store and ask to test fire a few pistols before you decide. A .380/.38/9mm is most likely the caliber you want, anything smaller doesn't have the stopping power, anything larger could be tough to handle.
A revolver is going to have a 7-9 lbs trigger pull, most semi-automatics are going to be in the neighborhood of 4 lbs, but will have a safety.

Precision firearms in BR has a decent assortment of rentals.......... That's how I picked out my first gun.

I like that one. It's cute.
Now you can see why I'm asking for advice. I'm picking based on looks alone.

I need one for carry.
I've got a Glock 19, with the RTF because when I'm usually out plinking it's 110 degrees and sweaty. Not great for carrying because of size and texture.
I think I'm going to wait it out a bit and hope the demand comes down if/when people stop freaking out as much as they are now.

Get a gun with 100 rounds and make some noise.

I own two handguns - a Glock 17 (9mm) and a S&W .357 magnum. I prefer the revolver. Even though it's heavier, I feel safer with it because of its reliability, its safety, and its power. (You only need one shot with the right ammo to do major damage.) I'm also very comfortable with it, and I believe that is extremely important for any gun owner - to find the one that fits you.
I've been shooting since I was young, but I recommend that anyone who is relatively new to handguns do the research, shop around with a friend or relative who's knowledgable about them, test many, go to reputable dealers, take your time choosing, and definitely find the one that suits your needs best & that you are most comfortable with.
