Agree, particularly if you are going active duty. My Dad retired from the Navy, my brother went Navy and I had to be the odd ball and go Army. I don't regret my choice, other than my MOS didn't have much practical application in the civilian world.

Air Force will probably hold a lot of transferable education and job skills, compared to the others. Mechanical specialties should be chosen with whatever industry is near where you live. Learn where the mobilization units are too. With the wars wrapping up, no need to go gung ho. There enough high schoolers who want to take those spots. Do your research on the jobs, and ask around the military forums. You will be surprised to find out how much some jobs that sound cool actually suck (intel, NBC, utility engineer).

I know the path, it was a while back though. I was 26 when I started. Here are the basics:

-College degree
-AFOQT (basically a standardized test, buy the ARCO book and study for a month or so)
-BAT (this has changed to something else, but it was a video game to test hand-eye coordination)
-Flight time (don't necessarily need a PVT license, but flight hours add to your PCSM)
-PCSM is a score of all of the above, I've heard it's a % of likeliness to make it thru UPT (undergraduate pilot training)

Once again, I'd find a unit close and see if you can talk to them. Baseops.net has a forum that used to be pretty helpful. It's a good place to start and could answer your med question.

It is a pain in the arse to get thru the process, but entirely worth it.

Honestly, the best thing that happened to me in the Navy was getting my DUI which resulted in the loss of my nuke contract (and loss of rank, restriction, etc.) Sucked at the time, but i re-rated to HT and had a lot better experience than what it seems like my old nuke buddies are having.

I guess one of the glaring questions I have before going into this is if you don't get accepted to pilot training / flight school or whatever, will you get stuck in the Air Force doing something you definitely don't want to do, or is all of that prior to actually signing up?

I think I read on the Air Force website that a Pilot actually signs for 10-12 years instead of the normal 4 or so. Does that sound right?

You don't have to sign up prior, I didn't. Now, you can wash out of training and you might get stuck doing something else.

Yep, 10 years is the norm, but if you're Reserves, it's not 10 years of active duty. Also, things change in 10 years, never know when they'll let you go or stop loss you.

My advice, certainly under this administration, would be to not join the military.

Go to Arlignton Cemetery or BAMC too see what being in The Military can do for you.

I am actually. My oath was to defend the Constitution against threats foreign and domestic.

Not seeing a lot of foreign threats to our Constitution, our President and his regime piss on the Constitution on a regular basis.

In the words of John Prine, your American Flag decal won't get you into Heaven any more etc etc etc.

Join the Army if you are going enlisted in reserves. Don't be a dumbass and have half a brain and then you can apply to become a warrant officer pilot in no time. Plus the Army is legit in a miserable way.

I'm a former Army officer.

Go Air Force. You won't get shot at or shiver in a tent without a shower for weeks at a time.

Man I have thought seriously about this ever since finishing college. I always wanted to be a pilot growing up.

Also, sight. I am -1.25 in one and -1.75 in the other. Doesn't flying have restrictions?

I'm going to fly in the Navy. Had to take a bunch of tests and they look at everything from what you did in social groups to test scores to your gpa. Your eye sight is good enough but will ding you. How is your depth perception. That is what fricks you the hardest. I had to get an independent doctor to give me an extremely comprehensive eye exam to prove I had adequate depth perception because the meps docs don't give a shite.

All depends on your rate (job) for which branch is best.

Air Force and navy definitely have the coolest toys. If you want to blow shite up, go USMC. Wouldnt bother with the army (no offense to any soldiers here). The marines are pRt of the navy as well. Depends on MOS as well. If you have a civilian job you are wanting to gain experience for then I would check and see which one would be best

The only problem with the Air Force is: You can get stuck for an entire enlistment on one base in the most boring part of the world and or country.

As a Marine after bootcamp I saw Memphis, El Toro, Camp Pendleton, North Island, Yuma, and went Permanent duty for a year to Iwakuni Japan but took a 6th month detail to Okinawa and then to Philippines before coming back to North Carolina where I mustered out all in 4 years.

I wish I had stayed in the reserves when I got out. The only time I set foot on a ship was to help rewire a tug that had a positive ground on the hull for two weeks in Morehead city.

Oh, we went to the field once, Boge field somewhere near Cherry Point beer hooch and all.

Im just looking at reserves. I actually talked to a Navy recruiter before I started this thread. I scored high on their practice test and they tried to get me to do active duty. They kind of dogged the Air Force when I mentioned I wanted to talk to them too.

I know it's your life, but stop talking with the Navy man.

Army or Air Force, period.

Don't let those guys talk you into anything, they lying through their teeth.
