how the frick do they not beat MS.

Syria could out rank MS

MS actually has a lot of really nice areas...... but there's a really large part of the state (delta) that is an absolute shithole. Having lived in AL and MS, there's not a lot of difference except that the really poor part of MS is bigger than the really poor part of AL (black belt counties)...... and Alabama beaches are 100x better.

none of the states are bad if you earn a decent salary. every place is bad if you are poor.

#36 - Georgia

Georgia has to be a hard state to rank... Maybe every state has this to some degree, but if you just ranked based on North Georgia, Atlanta, Augusta, and then coastal Georgia, probably a little more like 20-25. There is still like 1/3-1/2 of the state that just doesn't measure up well on some of those scales.

As someone else mentioned though... having a Dakota in the top 5 certainly makes your rankings pretty questionable.

I never understand why places like Alaska, Montana, Idaho, and the Dakotas don't comprise the butt of these lists

Good bet you've never actually been to Montana.

Factoring infrastructure, economy, corruption, crime, and quality of drinking water, I don't see how Michigan isn't in the bottom 10.

Climate and weather are huge for me. I don't care what the other factors are if I can't be comfortable most months out of the year. Places that cold, even trendy places, are downright unbearable to me. You're both right, I've never been so I don't know what good things are there, but I know for certain that I wouldn't be interested in staying long term. I guess most people just disagree with me. If I'm wrong, I'm wrong.
