Austin's white population is less than 50%. There are over 60,000 blacks in the city. Athens' white population is 65%. There are under 20,000 blacks in the city. The difference here are the amount of Hispanics. Hispanics account for 35% of Austin, whereas it only accounts for 5% of Athens.

College kids rebel against their parents values.

ALso, govt/school employees who depend on public funding tend to vote Democrat.

Athens isn't Northern California or Park Slope. It's southern cultural liberal. Musicians, art people, professors, etc.

I'm sure you must mean that educated people generally vote progressive. I have Masters degree and I do not nor do most of my friends most of whom have at least an undergraduate degree. Upbringing, where you were educated, occupation, etc. probably have more to do with political inclinations than education alone. Here's some summary data on Wiki: LINK Note that 92% of what they categorize as Enterprisers voted for Bush in the Bush vs Kerry election and 46% of those Enterprisers had college degrees. 81% of what they call Liberals voted for Kerry and 49% of them had college degrees.

Equally as funny is that Democrats of the 60's and 70's were known as ' Dixiecrats' until they became Reagin Republicans of the 80's. then morphing into the 'Tea party' of today.

It's Patterson Hood types. I always saw it as more focused on being counter-culture to the "family values" Bible Belt southern consensus.

63.2% of Clarke County voted for Obama in 2012, making it the second bluest county in the SEC after Richland (USC). Anyone can explain this?

Richland County SC (voted 66% for Obama of those who voted, and that's key) is only 47% black but 99% of the blacks are gonna vote liberal because you know you're gonna have all the racist blacks voting for the black man ... plus the white-guilties mixed-in, and most of the mexicans which makes-up about 4% of Richland County. Then you've got all the bleeding heart liberal university students who had their heads opened and bullshite poured-in by the liberal professors, (many of us were impressionable to the liberals back in our college days- but not me) ... anyways, they'll come around to the good side eventually.

But all told Richland County was what for Hussein ... 66% of those that voted?

What that really means is that 85% of the blacks voted in 2012 (more if you count the dead ones that voted), while a smaller percentage of whites voted ... probably less than 50%.

Richland County is mostly liberal though. Richland and Orangeburg Counties .... high black population = high percentage of liberal voters. That's two counties outta 46 ... of which, counting the two aforementioned there are probably a total of four blue counties in this state.

Owell.

Many years ago, I taught for three years in an overwhelmingly white affluent Texas suburb that was very conservative. I have kept in touch with many of my former students. They are now around 30 years old and are, with only three exceptions that I can think of right now, essentially communist in their outlook and at odds with the politics of the families that raised them. Thus the case of Athens is not a surprise to me.

I lived in Johns Creek for a little bit. Everyone I know that went to UGA is red. I think a lot of the blue is the large amount of northern transplants there. USC is the only college I've been to with as many northeastern transplants as UGA.

All of the well-to-do white republicans in the area live in Watkinsville/Oconee County.

Go look up how they voted.

Bingo. Oconee is blood red. Clarke Co is blue. Just take a guess as to who lives where (hint: the housing projects, low-rent prices, and music venues are all in the latter).

I live in Clarke and I can vouch for this.

I've grown to enjoy the subversive mini-feud that ATL Highway and Epps Bridge are in over Oconee stealing all of the Clarke businesses. The Flagpole does a good job narrating the back and forth with their apparent pro-Clarke edge. I particularly like the image I get of the Oconee council folk as brainless, soul-sucking vacuum cleaners robbing Atlanta Highway and Clarke County of life with their new fangled development and traffic lights (which, along with commercial gentrification, Clarke seems to be really against anywhere beyond downtown).

Have you noticed how much of the land on Hwy 78 is for sale between 316 & 53? We came to Oconee for all of the stereotypical reasons. Epps Bridge is close enough for us to go shopping, yet far enough away from the elements of the retail crowd. I hope they're aren't people hoping to build on my end of the county.

I have a feeling that while Clarke and the surrounding areas continue to get built up, the rich folks in Oconee will do their damndest to keep it quiet and tranquil around them. Can't say the same for Barrow, though.
