I don't know about Denmark, Norway, and Sweden, but if the summer is anything like Finland hopefully you just happen to make it to this area on the 1 day of summer we have every year. We did have the warmest May in 55 years, but its quickly given way to rain and cold.

That being said, in July, I believe the 31st this year we have the annual Vantaa River Beer Float. Which is on my bucket list and I plan on going this year. LINK

Also, don't know if you are single or not, but Milliklubi in Helsinki is rated as the number 1, one night stand club in the entire world.

Yeah.. checking climates the time of year I was thinking about going is probably going to make that a different time trip. Cold, wet and 3 hrs of light would be waiting for me when I was thinking of going. Ireland may be my next first choice.

As far as whoever the poster was that mentioned Germany, Beerfest in Munich-Bayern (Bavaria region). There are several great places to visit. What I like most about Munich is the fact that you can get a Bayern ticket. Which is about 23 euros a person per day. But the more people you have the better it gets. 2 ppl cost 28, 3 cost 33. ETC.. Basically it goes up by 5 euro increments for each additional person you add to it. Although I would recommend a rental car you can easily get around to damn near everywhere just on the Bayern ticket. That ticket covers travel to Salzburg, Austria as well, and I have heard it covers Switzerland, but not sure how that works. But the ticket also covers travel to Neucswhanstein Castle, Berchtesgaden, Zugspitze (highest mountain in Germany.

My favorite part of the Bayern region is the fact that its so close to so many other places. Venice is also only about a 3 hour drive from there, or you could just drive to the Brennero pass which is near all the areas before mentioned just to claim that you went to Italy. Also you can get to Prague dirt cheap from there if you wanted to take a quick train.

My only 100% true avoid list place would be Frankfurt, its a shitpile. Been many places and its one of my least favorite cities I have ever been.

Europe in the later part of the year is great too if you can handle the cold weather (which isn't all that horrible...just takes some time to get adjusted). Most Americans are only able to take off of work during the Spring and Summer months due to how things work here economically/school-wise (for our children). But trips to Europe after October are insanely cheap to book if you are able to do so. I know Thanksgiving and Christmas get in the way a bit for us when making these decisions, but if you like to travel, traveling during this time would cut your financial obligation in half. No one in Europe really cares about America's Thanksgiving season in November...but practically every single person in the U.S. does. That makes a perfect and very affordable trip if you are willing to sacrifice that time and just skip Thanksgiving for the sake of experiencing the world for what is likely just a one-time trip to these places. You can't beat the value you get around that time of year.

But, like I stated, it is sometimes hard to break traditions of Thanksgiving and telling your family that you won't make it "this" year.

Great value and experience non-the-less. It is the perfect time to go in my opinion.

That video was awesome. But there is no way that that river had enough time to warm up to any American Southerner's standards in the short "summer-time" that you get in Finland. It bet it is ice-cold and not a single person in that video had any type of sunburn. Nope!

I just bought a sprinkler for my kids and hooked it up to an outside water hose for some cooling off and it took 5 minutes to get the boiling hot water out of the water pipes just to let them cool off without them having 2nd degree burns.

I don't think my kids are ready to swim in Finland right now, lol.

Caribbean? Maldives? Canada? Europe? Asia? Australia? Scandanavia? Where would you go?

If your desire to travel out of the country is to experience other cultures, avoid the Caribbean. The Caribbean is beautiful, but in all likelihood you'll be at a beach resort with mostly Americans and Canadians.

Canada has some nice places (the Canadian Rockies are beautiful... Vancouver and Toronto are great big cities).... but its essentially an extension of the US, culturally.

If you want to experience other cultures, you've got to hit either Europe or Asia, IMO. Add South America if you are able to speak Spanish.

I've visited 20 countries in Europe, 6 countries in Asia, and 3 countries in South America, and I would say if you are wanting to travel outside the country for the very first time, you're best bet choice is either Great Britain or Italy..... you can add Spain if you are able to speak Spanish.

Great Britain has it all. London is such a world city that in some aspects it puts even New York to shame. But the British countryside has some beautiful spots with tons of history and quaint villages. But the best part is its a completely different culture yet no language barrier. That makes it a great choice to learn how to get around in Europe. Once you've mastered a city like London, it prepares you for a more difficult city like Paris.

Italy is also a great choice because the people are the most friendly in all of Europe. There is TONS of history. And because Italian food is so familiar, ordering in restaurants is very easy. You can venture to less touristy spots and still read the menu without too much trouble.

I'd avoid Paris until after you've mastered travelling Britain and Italy. Britain and Italy are the most accommodating to first time International travelers. France is a bit more difficult from a communication standpoint, but if you put forth just a little bit of effort, its not that bad. Still, it can be frustrating at times.

I would recommend travelling in Europe before you head to Asia. One of my favorite countries to visit is India... but its not for everyone. Most people I know who've visited India swear they'll never go back. It's crowded, loud, dirty, and heart-breakingly poor.... but it will give you a fresh perspective on how good you have it back home. Not to mention the food can be amazing. And you can stay in opulent hotels that offer luxury you likely wouldn't be able to afford in the US or Europe. China and other parts of East Asia are not nearly as shocking to Westerners unless you get out of the big cities.

I've not been to Australia, but similar to the United States, there simply isn't the history there that you'll find in Europe or even Asia. South America has a lot to see, but it too is relatively short on history.

I was seriously looking at Norway and/or other Scandanavian countries. Depends on when I go, but I am gonna shoot for Sept or October.

Don't go too late in October. The amount of daylight starts to significantly drop off during the month of October... as does the temperature.

I went to Norway in June a few years ago. It was beautiful. Everyone speaks flawless English. We spent a couple of days in Oslo, then took the train to Bergen. I liked Bergen more than Oslo. We also took a boat ride up the Sognefjord.... probably in the Top 2 or 3 most beautiful places I've ever seen.

If nature is what you crave, Norway is a great choice. It's a bit short on sights as well as history though. And it was by far the most expensive place I've ever visited. Keep that in mind.

Probably fly into Norway.

Look for flights on Norwegian Air Shuttle out of JFK. Find some other airline to get you to New York. Norwegian offers insanely cheap airfare to Oslo out of JFK....sometimes as low as $400 roundtrip. However, just know they make money on things that are free on other airlines like a seat assignment, checked bags, food, drink, etc.

Agree. To me, the "Big 3" cities that are must-see for anyone wanting to go to Europe are London, Paris, and Rome. There is literally so much to see and do in those cities and in the surrounding areas that even a week can't scratch the surface.

However, my next favorite big cities in Europe are Munich and Barcelona.

I went to Munich last September and had an absolute blast. We stayed just outside the old city at a brand new A-Loft. It was a very short walk into the heart of the old city... but it was also next door to the train station and a very short walk to the Augustiner beer garden. Day trips to Neucswhanstein and Salzburg are a must. While Munich is a city of about 2 million people, it has a smaller feel to it.

As far as big cities go, here is how I rate the cities of Europe in terms of the most important to see:

1. London
2. Rome
3. Paris
4. Munich
5. Barcelona

To me, these five stand out far above all the other big cities.

As for "smaller cities", but cities nonetheless, in no particular order I'd say Venice, Florence, and Seville are my favorites.

And for places off the beaten path, the Amalfi Coast is my favorite. The Cinque Terra is nice as well.

Thanks.

I saw most packages and things were cheaper going out of JFK. I was thinking of a one day train trip to New York. Amtrack has a 22 hour train ride and never done a train trip either. I may have to do Norway next year though, when I could go this year, there'll only be 3 or so hours of daylight and that would kinda put a damper on sightseeing.

Will you be travelling alone, or will you be travelling with a group?

If you are looking to meet other travellers, I'd suggest going someplace you know will still be warm. People are far more likely to be out bar-hopping if its not cold outside. Spain or Italy are perfect in early Fall. The summer months can be brutal there, but the fall is quite nice. By Thanksgiving it can be cold.
