I wouldn't either because it's at least 50k over capacity. However, it has improved so much that people that don't even live on 280 have started using it as their commute route to work. It's only going to get worse because some idiot decided to put a new hospital on 280 near I-459.

It would work better if people would drive faster than 35 mph.

Some people who work downtown and have to travel 280 either get to work at 6am and leave mid-afternoon just to avoid traffic.

Unfortunately, Birmingham people are just conditioned to drive everywhere. 280 will always be a mess. 280 is a prime example of how shitty urban sprawl can be. There was talk years ago of having a raised expressway that went into town in the morning and then would go the other way in the afternoon. Its a good idea but don't think the mess created by the construction would be worth it nor would municipalities like Mtn Brook go for it.

It was really idiotic not to include service roads on 280.

What do you like best about living in Bham?

You need to buy a Bama and an Auburn shirt. You wear whichever one is winning. You will fit right in.

After the 2013 Iron Bowl, that city literally changed colors overnight. Woke up Saturday in crimson and woke up Sunday wearing blue.

If what we have now is "better" then I'd hate to see what it was like. 280 is still a disaster. I've lived in metropolitan areas that had populations double the population of Alabama that didn't have terrible traffic flow like 280 has every day, including weekends

It's no worse than the North Atlanta major roads during rush hour, and I would say it's better. But I haven't lived in Atlanta in 15 years.

I drive 280 everyday and really the only bad part is Westbound stretch from Inverness to 459/Summit. That area is always congested. They need to so something about the Colonnade turn lane, and 459N entrance lane area, and that curb strip going halfway up the hill of the Summit entrance is the dumbest thing I've ever seen.

There are some service roads, but they allowed too much access to 280 which makes the service road useless.

It was even discussed recently, but there's just not enough money.

I always thought 65S was worse than 280 before they added lanes to 65S at 459.

Helps what? I've seen traffic backed up all the way to the Marriott at Grandview with people trying to get into the Summit from that direction.

It forces people keep moving until they get well into the Summit. Stops people from trying to change lanes as soon as they turn in which would back up traffic even more.

"New" hospital that was built 12 years ago.

What would you propose had been done with the 13 story almost finished hospital? Continue to sit empty and go to waste just in case it adds a couple extra minutes to your commute?

That would probably work if there wasn't a traffic light at the end of the strip where people coming from EB 280 try to merge over to turn at. Traffic rarely keeps moving from that lane, though it does keep moving in the 2 other lanes.

Use it for something that won't add as many people on an already over capacity road. Adding more ambulances to the area sure won't help.

Not to mention it will add another signal to a corridor that has too many.

If people would just turn right at that light, you wouldn't have that problem.

What do you use a 13 story building for that won't add more traffic?

It was designed and built to be a hospital. Even being finished 12 years late the way it was designed it will still be one of the most state of the art and modern hospitals in the country. To use it for anything else because of concerns about traffic convenience is disgraceful.

And I'm not sure if you realize how far they had gotten in building it when construction halted in 2003 but the cost to renovate it to even be able to use it as anything but a hospital would be huge. Millions upon millions.

Tear it down, make a parking deck, add a bus system.

A hospital is absolutely the best use for that building. Most shifts at a hospital start around 7 and end around 3, so the traffic impact during rush hour won't be as bad as it would be if they had used that as a corporate office of 8-5'ers. No doubt it will add a lot of traffic to an already congested 280, but I think the impact during rush hour won't be that bad. It would ease the impact if they could do something about the stretch of lights from the Chick Fil A to the river. That stretch is what bottles up traffic so bad.

There's not much else they could do there.
